R COFFIN. Associate Editor
FLORENCE. S. C..
SATURDAY EVENING DEC. 7 1895.
Severe storms and earthquakes,
are reported in Europe.
Five negroes were hung in the
State yesterday, by law.
Mr. Ball has resigned the edit
orship of the Charleston Post.
One of the many rumors about
the Sultan of Turkey is, that ho is
insane.
Theodore Durrant has been de
nied a new trial. He will appeal
to the Supreme Court.
We are always glad to aid others
in editing their editorial and local
columns. Help yourselves broth
ers.
Oklahoma has made arrange"
ments to send a committee to
Washington, to push the claims of
admission.
The State dispensary has such
a pressure of orders that it will
be run night and day, two forces
being employed.
The gold and silver war, it is
thought, will have no results either
way for some time, but will remain
just as it is, each side standing by
their colors.
Said Pasha has taken refuge in
the British Embassy, being afraid
of $^e wrath of the Sultan, who
had urged him to reside in the
palace grounds, but he considered
it a scheme to get him out of the
way and refused.
Senator Tillman and Governor
Evans were denounced in Atlanta
the other day for the speeches
made by them on South Carolina
day. The exposition committee
passed resolutions condemning
them in an emphatic manner.
The committee consisted of repre
sentatives from all parts of the
country.
A man in Augusta the other
d.iy, was crazed with grief on ac
count of the death of a little son
three years old. He went home
after making arrangements for the
funeral and threw the body out
the fourth story window, but the
child was unhurt.

The Armenians in this country
have petitioned Congress to help
them, and protect their friends in
Turkey. It is a shame to Christ
ian nations to allow such outrages
as are being suffered by Christians
in another part of the world with
out trying to put a stop to it.
Ar. employee in a Wilming
ton cotton mill was badly hurt
Thursday by having her hair
caught iu a belt and jerked out.
Her injuries are thought uot to be
serious. The women working in
such places should w’ear a close
fitting cap, and thus avoid such
accidents that are very common.
; An appeal to the patrons of the
school, by Superintendent Leigh,
is .published in another column.
Mr. Leigh wishes all the pupils to
be present that their standing may
not be jeopardized, and as a long
vacation has been given there is
no good reason why every pupil
should not be at his desk each
school day. Notwithstanding the
long vacation the teachers will
still spend eight dayp more iu the
school room than they are requir
ed to by law. Let all parents and
friends of the school co-operate
with the teachers in their desire to
carry on the school effectively.
There is a very full attendance,
there being 179 boys and 181 girls,
a total of 360 i:i the white school,
and with this encouraging show
ing all should be pleased.
TRAIN8 GOING NORTH.
There is to be an “American
Commerce Banquet” at Delmoni-
co’s, in New York, on the 19th, to
celebrate the first centennial of
commercial liberty in America as
secured by the treaty with Eng
land by John Jay, of New York.
All parts of the country will be
represented.
