He was considered a good doctor and had a /ine practice. His patients had . all confidence in him, and felt relieved with even his presence in the sick room. Kb whs full of fun and always had a good word for everybody. His office was adjoining the Draft's hotel and he was punctual to his ' hours there. Doctor Hendrix married Mrs. Joana Caughman and they only had a son, "Walter, both of whom survive him today, living few miles out if .town. * .v / * Dr. Charlton E. Leaphart, after the war chose the profession of medicine and graduated at Charleston, S. C.v returning home he at once became an active student and entered the field for actual work. Day and jiight found h|m busy, anxious to progress and become Useful and valuable to the sick and afflicted of this community: He soon grew important a** his patients had emplicit. trust in him, and the contents of his medical ' - - * , t hand case" whch he carried, on all occasions. His practice was extensive and he, perhaps, worn out moire -horses and buggies than any doctoi' in this community, and his charges were liberal, to the poor he Vas extremely charitable. Dr; Leaphart married Amanda Catfghman, to" them were born two daughters who died quite early?two sons?Sam'l J. and C. 33. Leaphart, who are now the only surviving members of the family. Dr. Simmons was a- gvand old man but was queer in.<some of hi<? ways and ideas, though 'impocent in. mean-i ing. He once rented the field in rear of his home from Maj. Ephrian Corley. Frank, a colored man, was his faithful servant and did the farming. After bre?king and hauling in his crib two one-horse'loads of corn, Maj. Corley, after wating a reasonable time for his rent, finally asked Dr. Simons for his thirds he was to have for rent. It is said that Dr. Simons was very fond of ice cram, and unfortunate^ he eat so much one night, that it i really caused his death. As he never recovered from this feast of cream, % and his remains now lie mouldering in his grave in St. Stephens cemetery. * . .
