Finally it changed hands from the Fishers of Columbia to Dr.' R. W. Gibbes, who became in charge and it was then managed successfully by his son, Maj. James G. Gibbes, when W. G. Childds and the Palmers were also . interested, and later Colonel William Johnson of j of Charlotte, N. C. seemed to be chief owner and his son-in-law James1 M. Campbell was then general man-1 ager of the. factory. It's products j grew more and more in demand and ; the business was satisfactorily pay- \ ing well, until the mill was partlyburned from some cause but was , rebuilt and remodeled with beter upto-date machinery, etc. ' It was again destroyed by Sherman's army at the approach of it to i Columbia. There were much ? 'tun and sport that can be recalled by J some of the older folks now surviving, { when our people met each other from '< 'the different sections of Lexington f county and discussed things in gen- 1 eral." ' < Besides the factory and other neccs-i i sary usiness buildings there were a jA number ol' houses built on the hill for , the convenience and comfort of the j mill employees and their families. The j ^ inhabitants numbered between two ^ and three hundred. They had a nice school house, and church, and many . other things, that go to make up a . live littlo town with streets and sidewalks, and all were prosnerous. satis-. * fied and happy. Now the place is 1 unknown with trees, gullies and partly with fields of good farming by the! Hooks. i We remember that Dr. Jacob N. ' Boozer, one of our beloved doctors ( j here for some time divided part of his ] time at Lexington and at Saluda, with his able services as surgeon and fam- ( ily physician. t i Several of the families were our own folks.
