f COTTON ON POOR LAND?
Clemson College, April 10.?Experinents
conducted by the Agronomy
Division of Clemson College, as well
? the experience of many practical
armers, go to show that poor soils
rill give a late crop of cotton. A
a,te crop of cotton means no cotton
,t all in the presence of the boll
reevil. It seems unadvisable, thereore,
where there was a heavy infesition
of boll weevil last year, to plant
otton at all this year on very thin
ind, unless generous applications ol
irtilizer are used. Consequently

and well cultivated.
As a general rule, the agronomists
f Clemson College think, it will be
etter to plant such land in other
rops rather than cotton and to make
n effort this year to plow under a
rop ef velvet beans, cowpeas, or
>me other leguminous crop in order

lise cotton on yery thin land under
all weevil conditions. If no control

past eighteen months much time has
been given by representatives of the
U. S. Deartment of Agriculture, especially
the markets 'division of the
Clemson College Extension Service
i and the county agents, to the study of
| grades for all truck crops shipped oul
i of South Carolina.
Tentative grades were drawn up on
eight or ten of the principal truck
I
crops in this state and these tentative
grades were given wide circulation
|
among the growers of this state by
the Extension Service. With these
grades as a basis, for criticism and for
further study grades have been arrived
at that it is thought will fit
South Carolina crops well. When
these grades have been circulated and
shippers have learned to apply them
we should then be able to see South
Carolina truck well on the way towards
standardization, says F. L. Harkey,
Agent in Marketing.
At this time no shipper can afford
to do less than ship standardized wen
graded and well packed product tc
market and expect any returns, i
Grades for cabbages, cucumbers, lettuce,
tomatoes, peaches, and asparagus
have been adopted and copies of
the grades can be had by writing tc

THE NEW PIANO.
/
* j
Word comes from London that Eni-j
manuel Moor, who is a composer of
i music, has invented a new kind of
pianoforte that has a double keyboard
and that is entirely practical. Ernest
Newman, the celebrated critic, calls
j ihe now piano an "epochmaking in- J
i vontion" and declares that the f-ifoots I
.produced with it are astonishing.
'
The now, or upper, keyboard is fin- J
. gored and played precisely as the j
other is, but it sounds notes an oc-j
tave above the notes of the usual j
board, which greatly extends the
j range of the pianist's execution. Bv-j
j means of an octave "coupler." like j
that so frequently applied to the organ,
he can play octaves with one
finger, and tenths with a finger on j
each board with no more effort than
j he uses in playing thirds on the ordinary
piano. Moreover, by cluing- j
j ing a button he can so change the j
j mechanism that the niano gives forth j
j the peculiar tinkling tones of the j
! eighteenth-century harpiseliord. j
j though with more volume and bril- j
! liancv, and so can g?-i from the same j
! instrument the effects that were in- j
tended by composers as far apart in
time and musical development as
I Scarlatti and Rachmaninoff.
But after all the new piano will be
valued oy musicians, not lor sucn
j. curious contrivances! but for the way
in which it simplifies the playing of
some of the most difficult passages in
music and at the same time makes it
j possible for one pair of hands to proj
duce a richness and a volume of tonethat
have hitherto required two performers.
Just what effect the new
instrument will have on musical composition
we must wait to see. One
thing, however, seems likely:.when oc?
i tave passages, instead of requiring on
j the part of the pianist an exhibition
! of manual agility that opens the eye:
j and the mouths of a concert audience
! can be played with one finger composers
will not find so much pleasure
in scoring them.
Sometimes the difference between a
pessimist and an optimist is a fresh
shave.
