Dad finally decides that he might uh well Starve to death as be pestered to death and arranges for a second mortgage on the house. Then he visits an agent who oner told him that a man of his standing should have a car, and does his part to encourage the discovery of new oil wells. The agent has been demonstrating with the car for six months, but it is still a new cur. As he tells Dad, it is "just nicely limbered up." But by the time Dad, drives it homo it has become a used car and has depreciated per cent. By the time all of tho members of the family have learned to drive, it, it Inis depreciated in value another 25 per c ent. And the gasoline bills jiave had a similar effect on old Dad's hank balance. The members of the family learn to say "The Car," always with capitals; to speak casually of what "she" did on that hill north of town, and to draw liberally on their imaginations when revealing the number of milts obtained: to- the gallon. During the first three months the car is washed every second day and ran under a shelter when rain threatens. But when the paint begins to dim and the tires to wear, the mud of many roads bliokes the. spokes and the family refers to the ear lightly as "the old boat." The fever lias . cooled. But one more family lias learned to class an iutomobile "as a necessity, and one more rod has been placed in pickle for the chap who invented the mortgage. A lot more could be said good and bad of the automobile. 1 The Names Club. R. A. Christian is a preacher in a South Georgia city. ' 1 "I Nobody steps on tT HVtP~wtre . It's the same way about a man. After an interesting expatiatfon on .the attractive novelties in the spring styles, the fashion authority finally reached the subject for skirts, which candqr forces one to admit, have not played so prominent a part nl the fashions of recent years. After explaining the new features of the spring skirts, the gentleman remarked? ? "The correct length for skirts tltit seasoA will bo 12 inches from the knee."
