GIRLS CAN SMOKE
BUT NOT IN ROOMS
_____ %
New York, Feb. 12.?Smoking by
graduate girl students in the dormitories
of teachers' college, Columbia
university, is banned on architectural
rather than ethical or moral grounds.
This announcement was made on
Mornlngslde Heights today by Miss
Maragret Kilpatrick, president of the
student body of Whittier hall, in giving
out news of the readmission of
two girls expelled In the fall semester
for violations of the "no smoking"
rule.
"The tlrls horn qninL-n TV. oil ?
said Miss Kilpatriek, but "we do not
all smoke here in the hall. The rooms
are too small and that is really the
reason for the rule aga'nst smoking
in Whittier.
"Why, the place would soon be a
smoke stuffed den if we allowed the
girls to smoke whenever they pleased.
It would be entirely too stuffy and unbearable.
Smoke would be oozing
from under the doors into the hallways
so that the girls could not even
sleep at night.
"They all smoke wherever else they
want to, but not in the halls."
Miss Kilpatriek said the girls expelled
were both under 25, and added:
"There was no row about their being
readmitted 10 the hall. They have
been an example for the other girls.
.They happened to be the ones who
were caught. Now, whenever a girl
smokes in the hall, she knows she is
doing it* at great risk. We won't
imtc uur rules ac-lliocl."

ORCHARD SPRAYING
Will you produce good lruit in
1922? If the people of this State expect
-to prduce a good crop of fruit, it
is now time to make plans. The fruit
industry must be developed; it cannot
stand, still or it will decline in production.
Why wait to use remedies until
losses force the issue? Why not save
disappointment by beginning now to
protect your fruit from the invading
insects and diseases?
The control of insects and diseases
is an essential factor nl good production?perhaps
the most important factor?therefore,
depends, first on a
knowledge 01 the pests that attack the
fruit and the tree; second what materials
to use to control the pests;
third, when to make spray applies
tions so as to secure control; fourth,
thorough application. If you are fully
acquainted with the answers of the
above, reference to a spray calendar
is not necessary, if you are not familiar
with this, you must become informed
in order to produce good
fruit. "When you become informed
see that your neighbor gets the same
information.
One cannot be too careful in the
application o lthe various spras. It is
no doubt true that many growers believe
that they do good spraying
when much of the tree has not been
reached with the spray material. Control
of badly infested orchards can
only lie secured by covering every susceptible
part with the right spro" material
at the time pests can be
reached. A very fine spray is the
one that gives results.
Certain new spray materials are offered
to the fruit growers each year.
Many of these are of no account, and
some of them are injurious. Some
of these new sprays offer promise of
great success, but, unless the grower
is reasonably assured that the spray
will be effective, lie should test it on
a small scale, if he uses it at all.
One thing that the fruit grower
should always keep in mind never use
Bordeaux mixture in t hP,. peach orchard
during the growing season.
Self-boiled lime-sulphur is the propel
fungicide for the peach after growth
is resumed in the spring. Bordeaux
mixture will burn the* foliage.
The following sprays are recommended
to be used before foliage appears
on the trees:
For scale?Commercial lime-sulphur
1 part to 9 parts water.
Scab and peach loaf curl?Same as
for scale insects.
Sprays for later use will be given in
due time for controlling ttye curculio.
bro\yn rot. cpdling tnojftM&ud various
leaf eating insects.
1 will be glad to assist anyone living
near Lexington in the preparation
and the application of these sprays.

THE CLUB MARKETS
ABE MONEY MAKERS
Lancaster, l'a., is the richest county
for its size in the United States. Latest
estimates place Its agricultural and
dairy products at $30,000,000 for the
year 11)20, according to M. H. Carter
in an article in tlio February, 11)21,
issue of the Ladies' Home Journal.
Certainly a tidy sum to be divided
among tiie farmers. Consider these
facts a minute and leave them quietly
resting as a background while wo go
on with the story.
To make a little money and stay |
at home at the same time?there lies
the crux of the problem for millions ;
of mothers today. Basketeering solves
that problem for the women of Lancaster
county. Hundreds, if not thousands,
of Lancaster county women are
today availing themselves of this opportunity
instead of working in factories
or stores or stripping tobacco.
Club markets solve the problem
for the women of South Carolina.
Twenty-three have been established
in different parts of the State.
Already our State boasts four counties
in the list of 50 richest agricultural
counties in the United States.
When our markets are fully developed,
who can foretell what the re.3ult
will be? As we well'realize that
oesides being a gainful occupation
he club market is a liberal education,
tt practical training, a means of
lelf-expression through creative work '
lih! salesmanship, a money-maker
ind a game all combined, in which
'mi can start on next to nothing eaptr.lir.ation.
If the club market could
ie spread from a local to nationwide i
;ult, it would he one of the biggest
hinga that has ever happened to the
Jniteil States.

Time is the test of truth. And
Doan's Kidney Pills have stood the
test in Lexington. No Lexington resident
who suffers backache, or annoying

by this twice-told testimony.
Mrs. It. F. Powell, Main .St.. Lexington,
says: "1 had a dull ache in
my back and in the morning when I
got up I could hardly bond over. 1
tired easily and it was an etfort for
me to do my housework. Headaches
and dizzy spells bothered me and my
sipht was blurred. Doan's Kidney
Pills from the Harmon Drug Co., gave
me relief almost at once and after using
three or four boxes all the trouble
disappeared."
Over three years later Mrs. Powell
said: 4'I think just as much of Doan's
Kidney Pills today as I did when 1
recommended them nearly four years
ago. 1 haven't had to use a kidney
medicine since that time."
