WEDNESDAY, DEC. 21, 1921 LOWER TAXES IS SIGHT B y The statement of tne Joint LegisI lative Committee 'On Economy %nd W' Consolidation, which was published in j The Dispatch-News last week came ? ^ as good news to the taxpayers. The S * state owes a debt of gratitude^to thje III * members-cof this committee, Who have. ' IS been laboring throughout the summer \ and fall of this year, not witBtfttf some g? ? sacrifice of their personal,, interests ; which are large, in an effort to find some relief for the taxpayers. This has in no sense been a "whitewashing" body.,' The committee has gone into $ * all the intimate details of the state's } business, and in its report is pointing % ? 01*t4o the legislature a way to save a % % considerable sum of public money i t without materially injuring th^, ser-, - ?? r~ Vice Which the people's government It it" tendering to the state's citizens. The' Hcommittee has had able, scientific anc ;,r Unprejudiced assistance, and its con -" - - elusions nave Deen arnvea at oniy t after the most thorough and scien-V; tific analysis of the work which the \ . ' * ' J|; t^trious state agencies are doing and .||.i the'best means of; reducing the ex. 1 pense of that work while preserving k. and in some cases improving the effi iH.Ms-l ciency with which it is done. . ? ''WhiTe the committee is expecting g. some opposition, there ought, not to be* great difficulty in putting, the pro' ^ gram outlined through the. legislature ^ at. its coming qess$on The time has %; corfte for the utmo$t% economy in the ) conduct .of. public affairs. While, in V ' \v^ - v the Mortis of the Marion report ol x last year, "South Carolina is not a ? > paupes -eofkmyt'^yet ^here- is agreat deal of distress among.the people, and any lightening of their burdens will / . be a material aid. The programme f of the committee is, however, only '&> temporary. Real relief will not come if \ we Wave a complete and drastic ? change'in the tax system which will S' V more nearly equalize assessments and f place on the tax books milch property' 4 " that , is now. escaping- altogether. ; > In the meantime, however, the , V adoption of the plan suggested by i;the committee and aji earnest effort * ? on the part of all county delegations . so to keep local expenses down to a mini* -r ;;mum will afford temporary relief unv', til the proper steps can be taken to ?' inaugurate a permanent system tnat will Insure a better distribution of the 5 tax burden. i A MEAN TRICK We dislike very much to mar the spirit of the holidays with an ex pression of ill will in our paper, but I ? some mean person,, in a clumsy effort to perpetrate a. joke, took advantage < of the paper last week and caused it ' to print a notice of a marriage which 'i bad not taken place. It was a conH temptible thing to do; and: The Dis* patch-News, which prides itself on its ?. > * > * v accuracy, ,1s distressed at. this slip ^Yhich got by the vigilance of the man Fein the desk. We wish to express -^publicly our contempt for\the person who was guilty of this trick, and ..warn all concerned that hereafter .marriage notices sent to the paper ^ L *rtiust be "vfrell vouch'ed for by responsible parties before we can print them. With most of us this Christmas season may not seem so bright as some others in our memory, but when we stop to recount the many blessings which have been ours throughout the year, there is scarcely one of us who cannot afford to lay aside dull care f.or a few days of the festive. ,season, and celebrate with grateful hearts the anniversary of God's greatest gift to man. If we keep in mind the real reason for the celebration of this sacred anniversary, we cannot help but reflect the glow of good cheer and good will. The Dispatch-News wishes for all of its readers, advertisers and friends a merry Christmas and happy New Year. MAIL EARLY \X:> OITEX j j By Annie P. Schirmer. Clerk in New Roc-helle (X. Y.)
