Tew weeks ago of a strange malady
believed at the time to have been

I Allendale, according to information
{ received in Augusta today, stating that
nine persons are desperately ill at a
boarding house there after eating
biscuits made from ficur taken from
the Lee home at Baldock
The peculiarity of ti e situat.on is
that the affair took place at the
boarding house of Mrs. ii. F. Creech,
who is a sister-in-law of J. AV. .Lee,
who now lies ill at the University hospital
here.
Officials state thar following the

from canned goods, although
some of those affected claim that they
did not partake of the salmon.
Sheriff Bennett tonight, however,
declared that he favored the theory
of the doctors but to be on the safe
side would have samples of the flour
analyzed.

DR. OIJN SAWYER i
MAY ENTER RACE.
Special to The State.
Georgetown, Nov. 30.?Since Cole
Blease has announced himsell" as a
candidate for governor next year, the
name of a certain former friend and
right hand man of Blease has been
frequently mentioned in these parts
as the proper and suitable person to
oppose Blease and beat him for governor.
That man is Dr. Olin Sawyer
of Georgetown, who when Blease attacked
bitterly the Wilson administration
and opposed his government
before and after the declaration of
war, broke with his chief, and in a
ringing letter published in the state
newspapers challenged the position of
the former governor and denounced
his principles.
For this Dr. Sawyer lost caste with
all his former political admirers and
friends in the Blease camp. On the
other hand, he was warmly commended
and given the glad hand of fellow
ship by those on the other side who
wholeheartedly supported the government
and worked to the limit ot
their strength and give until it hurt tt^
win the war of righteousness and salvation
.
/
Throughout that trying period, Dr.
Sawyer contributed unsparingly o:
his time and gifts as a public speaker
to promote the country's cause. As
mayor of Georgetown at the time, he
was in position to do more than ordi
narily valuable work, and as a man
and a citizen there are few more
worthy than he to hold the office of
governor. He is hardly without a superior
as a stump speaker and winner
of votes, and can easily hold his
own and more too against any opposing
candidate?not excepting "Colie"
?as a shown down will prove, should
the doctor decide to enter the lists.
His many friends are urging liim tc
do so.

CHANGED WEST POINT. j
!
Today at West Point the cadets are
allowed liberties which it* they had
taken in other days would have put
tnem 111 tne guarunouse ana lanueu j
them on the "skin list" with a re-j
port which would have staked them j
to a dozen extra tours to guard duty, J
says the Chicago Evening Post. !
Brigadier General Douglass MacAr- j
thur, now the superintendent of the j
Military Academy, is responsible foi j
some of the extensions of liberty to!
the cadets. The general thought I
that the cadets needed humanizing1,
and perhaps they did, but even
though they be humanized, the academy
still is a place of strict discipline
and of hard training.
In the old days no cadet was allowed
a cent of pocket money. Now
he is allowed to draw from his pay
$5 in cash every so often, and, moreover,
he can spend it at the counter
of one store on the reservation or at
the cigar case of the hotel, to which
today he has unrebuked admittance,
whereas twenty years ago if he had
dared to enter without special permission
ho quickly ordered to "about
| race" ana go to ms quarters in arrest
.
The democracy of West Point was
maintained in the old days by three
things?hard discipline, imposed on
all cadets alike; a rule against the
possession of pocket money, and hazing.
. The millionaire's son was no
better off financially at West Point in
the old days than the market gardener's
son or the hodcarrier's son, for
that matter. In fact, the same thing

There is no hazing at West Point
today. It is likely that every person
in the land who never has been at
West Point, on hearing that hazing
is gone, will say something like
"Thank heavy!" but not so the oldtimers.
Hazing used to take the
cockiness out of some of the youngsters

who did not hail from the same kind
