I ROBBERS AT WORK p IN BATESBURG M Batesburg, April 4.?A thief entered 5 vi the hardware store of Holman-Cul*Hardware Co., sometime between ; Saturday night and Monday morning ?HBk and robbed the store of between forty fee?5 and fifty dollars. The money was IV&V taken from the cash drawer, which was securely locked. The cash reg>" ister was badly damaged, as there was no other way of securing the 6 - money than by breaking into the cash - drawer. The entrance to the building was effected by forcing an opening thorugh the door facing Granite street. Mr. C. C. Wise, who has been in failine: health for several months, died at his home in Batesburg Monday morning and will be buried at the Providence church cemetery Tuesv" ' f day afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mr. Wise was born in Edgefield county, now Saluda county .near Batesburg, J)ecember 29, 1857, and was therefore in the 64th. year of his age. He was married twice, his first wife being the daughter ^f the late Malachi Wittle and from this union one son, E. B. Wise was born. In 1897 he was married to Miss Sallie Blum and from this union eight children were born, of which seven survive him. He was the son of the late Capt. J. W. Wise of Saltfda county who had the following sons and daughters, all prominent citizens, in their respective communities: John F., William L., Samuel C., Roland W., and M. 1 Clyde Wise, Mrs. B. J. Watkins, Mrs. B. M. Holstein, Mrs. H. T. Bong and Mrs. J. P. Bodie. All of 'these brothers and sisters survive him. Mr. Wise united with the Methodist church when quite young: and lived the life of a consistent ; Christian up to his death. Mesrrs. M. E. Rutland and J. R. Unger spent Monday in Columbia. Hon. J. W. P. Harman, a former member of the legislature from Saluda county, was in town Friday. Hon. George W. Wightman has returned from a business trip to points in Georgia. Mrs. J. E. Brogden ol Wagener was the guest of friends in town Saturday. Rev. E. P .Taylor of Walhalla is .spending this week with his sons, J. C. Taylor and Dr. E. P. Taylor, of Batesburg. R. L. Keisler, a prominent farmer and business man of Gilbert, was here on business MondayK. R. Oxner made a business trip to Aiken Monday. Rev. D. E. The recent cold spell has consid; orably damaged the grain and fruit { crop of this section. ] Our farmers are rather late with their work on account of weather conditions and the difficulty of securing fertilizers for this season. Very few have finished planting corn or prepared the cotton land. The acreage in cotton will likely be cut at least 50 per cent in this section. The faculty, and student body of Summerland college worshipped at the Baptist church Sunday morning. On Sunday night, the Easter cantata by the choral club of Summerland college was repoduced at the Baptist church. The club was assisted by a number of the best male voices of Batesburg and Leesville, Miss Vilda Divers, the vocal teacher of Summerland college, directed the music. The rendition of the cantata was a credit to the institution and was appreciated by one of the largest audiences ever assembled in the church. Rev. J. R. T. Major, presiding elder of the Columbia district, filled the pulpit at the Methodist church here Sunday. j SANDY RUN FUN. | We are having some pleasant I weather at this writing.
