< Old Beliefs About Easter.
There i? ah' old weather superstition
to the effect that if the sun
.shines on Easter it will shine on
: Whitsunday.
If you bathe with cold water on
Easter day, you will keep well all
the year.
i There is another old superstition
i about eggs, and that is to rub over the
face an egg that has been colored
for Easter to have a nice complexion.
To cry on Easter is a sign you will
-cry on the following Sunday, too.
It is bad luck to keep Easter eggs.
They should be destroyed.
i lf a rabbit runs across your path
on Easter Sunday it is a good luck
.sign. (
For the lovelorn, there is a warning
.that one should not get engaged on
.Easter; Sunday ,else the engagement
will be broken. ;; /V- .

Easter Dawn ...
**~Tis Easter dawn," the lilies say,
J?4And Christ, our Lord, is risen today,

Let every heart be glad." ...
But in God's acre far away,
He lies, who once was blithe and gay;

"What means the Easter dawn to
me?'
I asked in gray despondency;
"My life is drenched with dread."
The lilies quiver as in pain.
"The one you love will live again.
And ever live," they said.
"Since Jesus lives, we cannot die,
For us He came on earth to buy
A life eternal. There,
Within a mansion safe, they too
Now live, the dearest ones we knew,

SPEAKING. OF LIFE'S JOYS. .
You can talk about the joy of living,
unalloyed bliss, the rustling of angel's
wings and all that sort of thing but,
to our way of thinking, the supremest
contentment that ever comes to human
beings happens along about the
time a young couple begin to build
the little cottage they expect to live
in and hope some day to own. There
will be a mortgage plastered on it
when they move in, and the monthly
payment on principal and interest
will make a sizable hole in the month
ly income; but they are both young
and hopeful ,and though they have
borrowed, some money, they refuse to
borrow trouble. They almost see every
brick laid and every nail driven. Time
goes by on leaden wings as the masons,
the carpenters, the plasterers,
I
the tinners, the plumbers and the
painters work from day to day,; and
the young hopefuls discover that/ they
never knew before how long it takes
to build a house. But while they wait
they are living in a heaven of anticipation,
and they will move into the
higher heaven of realization when at
last the finishing coat of paint has
dried and the builders have gone to
other tasks. , , .
The best thing we could'wish ia
young couple just starting life might
be something else; but if we could
make three or four wishes for them,
one of these three or four would be
that they might build a little bungalow
early in their married life, live
in it as they paid for it and find joy
in looking forward to the day when
the last note would be taken up and
the mortgage cancelled.

WHAT'S WRONG.

them to explain the situation in the
people's beef supply. The Bureau of
Markets finds that there was a decline
in the price of good beef steers on the
Chicago market within the limited
time between March 5 and 19, of
about $9.70 per hundred pounds.
While this reduction was going on, the
price of good steers at three large
eastern markets was advancing to
$7.63 a hundred pounds. Likewise,
while there was an average reduction
from $9.20 to $S.93 for medium beef
steers, the average wholesale price for
mecium beef steers went up from
$15.43 to' $16.65. There's something
wrong with the country's meat market
and it is for an accommodating and
all potent Republican administration
to find out what it is and let the peo>le
ki ow about it.?Char'otte Observer.
