a Lenten sacrifice appeal for the Near i
East relief was made public. President I
> Harding wrote General Wood as fol- t
lows: 1
"There ought to be no cessation of <
relaxation of our sympathetic American
efforts to be of service to these j
stricken people. One can well be- j
lieve that they will not survive if we <
withdraw the relief which has heretofore
been so generous from the pri- j
vate American purse. It has seemed ;
to me that all we have done has 1
borne dividends tenfold in the con- <
sciousness that we have done an hu- ]
mane thing for a people well deserving <
our generous sympathy.
I wish you the very greatest success ]
in furthering the great relief movement
to which you are now giving
your attention." j
