Colonel Joseph Newton Brown, S9, ranKing surviving omcer 01 me tunfederate army in South Carolina, died at his home in Anderson. Sunday morning at 0 o'clock. Lawyer, banker and capitalist, .lie was rated as one of the wealthiest men in the state. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted as a private. Later he organized Company If. 14th South Carolina Volunteers ,which he captained. Later he was commissioned lieutenant colonel of this regiment and in 1863 was made colonel of the organization, in which command he continued until the close of the war. He commanded the regiment in most of the important battles from Chancellorsville until April 21, 1865, when he was captured at the fall of .Petersburg and was held as prisoner of war at Johnson's Island until 1865. As senior colonel of McGowan's brigade he commanded the brigade in the battle of the Bloody Angle, Spotsylvania court house, Virginia, May i2, 1S64. He had command of this legiment in the battle of Gettyshnrrr lulv 1 1862. and with the first regiment. Colonel McCrary's, his men were the first troops to enter Gettyst-g. He was severely wounded at ines' Mill June 26, 3 862, and at Gettysburg, July 3, 1S63. He participated in most of the battles of Stonewall Jackson's corps.?Pickens Sentinel.
