KJEEPINGATIT ' ' | 1 .. ' A man must choose, again and again, when disaster meets him and has a bout with him and spills him whether he will stop right there or whether he will get up and go on. How can he quit and keep his selfrespect? How can he give up and keep faith with his fellows? If he does not carry on and do his part, he only shifts to the shoulders of some one else his bit of the general burden. Anybody can keep a boat going with the current; what tests* the strength and stamina is the row upstream. Adversity brings out the essential character. In fair weather a ! mnovs <1 oVvinin P- t'flfp. for incanung rv cai o u, -? ?? his visage reflects the sun; but the strong man keeps on smiling when the day is foul, for the optimist is of his own making and does not come and go according to the weather. Some men are smitten by a pang of jealousy to hear of another's success in a place where they fell down and failed. It would be more to the point if they studied the reasons for the other's victory and read to themselves [a lesson from an examination of their | own defeat. But no post-mortem is profitable unless it lead's, straight to a decision to try once more. It will do no good whatever to sit j grieving. The busy world rushes on; it has no time to give ear to a hardluck story?though in cases of acute distress its heart is far from hard and its sympathy is touching and magnificent. But it expects a strong man to clsunber out of the slump and show the stuff that is in him by refusing to be downed. The rewards go on to those who keep at it. All history is bestudded with the instances of those who were [valorojs and persistent, for whom the itide turned at last. You could not keep them broken land bespirited; you could not hold | them down.
