WHERE THE MONEY GOES. Why South Carolina Farmers Arc Not More Prosperous. (Greenwood Index Journal.) When one wonders where "the money" has gone to, it would not be amiss to reconsider some of the things we, along with others, have been harping on for years and years. According to "the reports from the fertilizer sales tax authorities in Co lumbia, South Carolina, farmers spent last year the sum of fifty-two million dollars for fertilizer. If we take an average of thirty-seven dollars and a half for each bafe, for the State, as we pointed out some time ago, this would mean that Greenwood county spent for fertilizer last year considerably over a million dollars, possibly a million and a quarter. A far bigger and less excusable item is that for food for man and beast. The Columbia authorities estimate that one hundred and ten million dollars was sent out of the State last year for this item. And if we take the average by counties, it shows that Greenwood county must have spent almost double its fertilizer bill in food last year, or approximately two and a half million dollars. If we add these two amounts together it will be seen that the crop of cotton if sold at present prices would not pay or much more than pay these two items. No account is taken' of the money for automobiles and other things which will run the total up enormously. This part of the world depends so largely on its agricultural products that its entire prosperity is bound up in that industry. It is not "pleasant and not always expedient to always be harping on disagreeable features but it is sometimes the only way to cure a trouble that if not' cured will bring about very serious consequences. The farms of this county must be made self-sustaining. There must be money spent for fertiliser, but intelligent farming will lessen the amount to be spent for commercial fertilizer. Cover crops, crop rotation and the use of compost and forest litter will not only bo better for the land but will be money in the farmers pocket. And above all that there must he foodstuffs. The food crops must not be figured or. in terms of what their cost would be as compared with cotton. liven when cotton was forty ? r WV1 1^. No matter if an acre of cotton would buy more bushels of corn than could be raised on the acre, the first essential of the real farmer is to make sufficient food to run his farm on und then look after Ins cotton acreage. Cotton is our chief money crop and despite the impending danger from boll weevil we must continue to plant cotton, hut tIn* drain on tin; country for l'od and fertilizer must stop unless general concern, and bankruptcy is We Can Save the Foiiov lioicm Im i' ai in nil Wire Fencing Rubber Roofir Metal Roofing Paints and Oil Buggies, Wag Gas Engines, \X/nnrI desired.
