CARD FROM "RURAL LIFE."
Editor The Dispatch-News:
We have had much discussion in
jthe_ papers in the past. Let us have I
[some real sane and sensible legisla- |
tion, and don't give way to the fear i
of the gainsayers of the body that are ;
cf the radical spirit. Get down to the !
'real consideration of the best inter- j
ests of the people at large.
Now, I want to make some suggestions:
Mr. Farmer, don't make;
'papers this year to cover your cotjtonseed:
this will save you the cost
I of linters against good cotton, and
[save the fertilizer price also; the oil
will not count against stock raising
i
and will make a market for peanuts.
J And another thing that hurts the
[country: as to roads, only the country j
[people pay road tax. Let the town j
folks pay as well as everybody else, j
and let the receipts go in a general j
fund and be equally divided between [
-fVk?. + V\n Tiocinlti livir>tr in i
; IliC I'UUllllCOi lVl mi t-i'i.y.i .. ....0 ,
1 town travel the roads as much or J
'more than country people; and to, it j
[will prevent the negroes from mak- j
j ing the usual boast that he can move |
: to town and avoid paying road taxes. |
! I
Now, as the rural folks receive only ,
secondary aid I believe it is time to
think of education as well as of the
i appropriations for the colleges to
ifrolick on. Take a few state insti- |
'tutions: they receive more state aid '
i
.than all the rural schools, and this!
j is not right nor fair,
j As to school teachers' salaries (fhev
icry poor pay; we cry poor teachers),
'they receive three times over what
jthey are really worth. It takes 10 j
years to make 10 grades and then
j they will not hold up at a high school
or college when they get there,
j I hope for the better.
