I WANNAMAKER SAYS I
PLANTERS WILL REDUCE
i
The following la part of a state- (
ment issued by J. S. Wannamakci, <
president of the American Cottcfn As- i
sociatlon in response to requests fcrr )
information concerning the reduc- (
tion of acreage campaign which is f
now being pushed in the belt, the j
closing of gins and the organization ?
of the export corporation. t
"The American Cotton Association, t
through its national officers, have t
completed plans for absolutely assur- ?
ing the acreage reduction of 33 1-3
per cent, in cotton production, for j
the year 1921 uniform throrughout the ?
belt. Every banker, merchant, f
broker and cotton factor in the entire i
i licit is being requested to execute a <
legal binding contract, binding them- A
selves not to xtnd rnwals'of, credit, .
credits are aecommodatioms to any j
farmer until and unless he executes j
a legal binding contract to reduce his
cotton acreage 33 1-3 per cent for the ]
year 1921. ,
"Kvery farmer is being personally'
solicited to sign contracts legally {
binding himself to this acreage rcduc- ,
firm. These contracts are made in
legal form, arc binding, and violation
of same lays the maker liable to pros- .
ceution and penalties. This aosolute- .
ly assures trie uniform reduction of
:::i 1-3 per eent. The execution of
these contracts is being met with
ready compliance on the part of farmers,
merchants, bankers, cotton factors
and brokers, and with the enormous
machinery of the American
Association, embracing in its membership
the entire cotton belt, the sue- ^
cess of this plan is absolutely assured,
which means, regardless of seasons,
that the year 1920 will show the
smallest, cotton crop produced in a
rlfi-rwl.. TH<? I m nw.i u <. !?..
rutins contracts binding themselves
in plow under hollies, snaps and low
Krude cotton, refusing to harvest
same, and the merchants. banters,
and far tors are requirinu in their
contracts not to extend credit unless
this is done.
"The American Cotton "Association,
through its national oflirials. has 'aid
before the olltcinls of its State divisions
in every section of the cotton
belt, the advantages to he trained by
the closing of gins until December 1.
This means that the closing of .iritis
will l?e acted upon immediately by I
each Stale division of M?e ass iaiion i
Ixmisiana has til ready acted and decided
to < lose, and other States, in j
all probability, will immediately fed- j

Clemson College. October 30.?
"We must not be pessimistic," sa^
Director W. W. Long, of the Extension,
Service, in talking about the
present low price of cotton. "There
in no rom for despondency. Notwithstanding
the great losses caused
by' the slump in cotton prices, we
have much to be thankful for, because
our food and feed <?rops are
abundant and valuable. The corn
crop, which in early summer promised
to be d poor one on small acreage,
now promises (by reason of the
farmers' response to the call for increased
acreage and better cultivation,
and the favorable seasons) to
be around, 44,000,000 bushels, the
largest in our ntstory.
'Then, too, wo have more hogs irl
the state than ever before, and our
livestock is increasing rapidly in
number and value. We have an immense
crop of fine hay; and we
have exceptional yields of sirup, a
big crop of sweet potatoes, etc,

as early as possible to the
seeding of a large grain crop, there
is no danger of want of food or

that this decline, the greatest in the
history of the markot, was due largely
to the fact that In the past ten
