Greonville, Oct. 6.?Fiery of face,
lian of waist, and raw-boned, Carlos
A. Rector, who was elected recently jj
to become sheriff of Ciroenville coun- 1
ty next January, used tb shoot apples <
off tho top of his brother's head to c
entertain his barefoot friends when <
they would call upon him at his par- t
ent8* hut way back in. the heart of 1
the Blue Ridge mountains. c
Mountaineers for miles and miles
around marveled at the- expert man
ner at which Carlos and his brother, s
Hendrix, han&Jed the rifle in making t
close shave shots \vlth each other as
human targets. Hendrix was elected
sheriff in 1908 and was serving his
third year of his second term when
he was shot and killed on July 4,
1919, by Jako Gosnell, deputy collec-.
tor of internal revenue, as a result
of old political strife. Carlos was J
then prevailed upon to make 'the !
race and he defeated six opponents, j
including Capt. Sam D. Wills, who (
was wounded in France, and who was
appointed by Governor Cooper as
sheriff to fill the unexpired term of
the late Hendrix Rector.

Both Hendrix and Carlos Rector, <
together with their brother, Jeff,
who followed General Pershing into
Mexico and France, and was decorated
for bravery, were born and j
"raised" in a little log cabin in what ,
is known as the "dark cirnor," be- j

lair of moonshiners, and still is. The
Rector boys, like all others who first ,
saw the light of day in this .dismal
section, did not think it any harm to <
n ake moonshine liquor. It was their
bolief?and this belief still holds }
with most nlountaineers today?that (
they had a God given right to do as .
they please with u scanty crib of ,
corn which they managed to raise on .
the hill sidob. So,' they distilled ]
"'white lightning" to sell and to (
drink. About 12 years ago Carlos t
Rector became intensely interested in
si religious "revival" and was conr ,
verted into the belief that "inakln*
liquor" was all wrong?it was not
the strong arm of the law that chang- ,
ed him, but the words of a mountain !
"'sky pilot." He even went out himself
and hesceched his fellow mountaineers
to abandon the still and
make an honest living. Among those
who heeded the appeal and reformed 1
was lila brother, Hendiix- from ,
then $>n they gave their hearts to law
enforcement. Hendrix Rector was
elected magistrate and Carlos served J
as constable.
k Goes to Greenville.
Then Hendrix moved to Greenville j
and within a short time this "lion of i
the mountains" became a lion in
politics and was elected sheriff, but j
not without stirring up political i
feuds because he defeated the scion j
of one of the oldest and most aggres- j
sive political families in the. state. 1
His spectacular career ended when
*hree shots from a gun caused his
l?ig heart to cease beating 20 minutes
past 12 o'click, noon, July 4, 101 ! ,
at a local garage. Awaiting a second
trial-for the alleged murder is Jake 1

"Not often does it fall to the lot of I

Congress Ills Next Goal. t
Carlos A. Rector, 36 years of age, 1
iaid that it was his earnest ambition i
o some day be elected to the seat in
icmgress to which his late brother as- ?
)ired. When Hendrix Rector, on a i
'isit to Washington for the first time 1
licked out in the capital what he :
said he hoped to make his seat, ho,
vas the subject of "feature' stories in
learly all the Washington pupers,
md his picture was prominently dismayed.
While having been elected by what
te said l.e is proud to term the "comnoil
people," it is generally admitted
jy the voters for the opposing fac- '
ion that Carlos Rector will make a
'earless, conscientious and "hell
justing" sheriff.

If our people ever can set high
;>rlces for their cotton again, they

:ake th6ir surplus money from them.
Readers who have money to invest
this fall will do well to ponder the
following item sent out by the United
States Treasury Department.
"Production'of oil is one of the
great fuel requirements of the world
today. But fake oil stocks have lit
the fires under hundreds of thousands
of bank accounts. Nathan Adams,
vice-president of one of the
largest banks of Dallas, Texas, in
touch with every ramification of the
great Texas 0n industry, estimates
that out of every $100 invested in
nil stocks, $95 is lost."
Oil stocks and mining stocks are
probably the most risky of all investments,
but it is a safe rule to invest
in no company that sends traveling
agents up and down the country in
search of buyers for its stock. Really
high-class investments are not sold
this way.
