WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1920. \
^ POOlilSH PIIACTICE. 1
The people of. I<ex!ngton are to be ?
congratulated, that there has been no
deveibpment here of the spirit which {
has manifested Itself in some other t
parts of the South and even in this r
state In the destruction or threatened 3
destruction of cotton gins. There 1b 3
uv nusd iu nuvu u. luvvoiueni. coining a
whatever Is to be gained^ by i lawless- ,
ness at any time, but the destruction j
Of Kin houses is a particularly foolish
thlpg because it would harm the very
people who are hurt worse by the
present low price of cotton! Many
farmers havo not sufficient storage
room for their cotton in tho.seed and ?
if access ton*gin were debarred them I
it would mean a serious . handicap. 'e
Because1 cotton is ginned cfoes not ^
' mean that it will be; thrown on the 0
,' market. But overi if ^dch ^should be 1
the case this is a fi*eio country and a 1
man Has a' right to ,J dispose of his (
property should he so see fit. When
we have come to a naes whore intimidation
prevents such act'on wo are no (
r. longer free but subject to the will-of
.
a lawless minority.
Every farmer who can possibly da J
' " so should, hold His cotton from tjff
market at.least until a fhir anil rpit- J.
?naUe price i?. to be. had. Every energy
should be bent to. the formation' '
of 9H exporfj <ffiH^byatiou. the success
of whic h will c&rtaii|ly v stpady the ,
present, declining' cotton "market. '
( These?twcy things, with a. 'material reduction
In acreage next year, will scenre
lor the fdrmers .something likp;
a living prlco for cotton. Burning
Practically eyeryono who is familiar
with the operation of the stato.gov- ^
eminent is unanimous in hoping for c;
favorablo action on this amendment, ^
and it Is believed that economies can .y(
be efte^tqd in operating the,government
when this"*change is made. ' 'it
will certainly facilitate the work of
the legislature by making reports of
all state officers and institution? available
when the sessrtoii begins instead, B
as is now the case, in mid-session and n
sometimes even >?ter adjournment. v
It would permit the legislature to (1
rrtore earofully scrutinize the work of 3
the state institutions and should make
grinhoiiscs will not only not do good
but will positively do great hai-ni.
It is gratifying to knertor that Lexington
folks have displayed better ^
sense than to engage in- such a foolish
practice.

VOTE. 7P^The
next congress will have tho job
of reapportioning representation in
congress^ Should, it be Republican*
in complexion there seems a settled
cenvietion that ritrong efforts will oe 1
madejo reduce t)ie South's representation:
In some ^quarters- there lias
been talk of basing our representation
upon ^;hc number of votes east in t
thp general election. We are uncertain
'whether or not this can bo done, .
% -i
but it is pell l'or every Democrat to
keep' this" threat in jfoijdd and look "up
hfs rcgistriitlop certificate and tax ro- r
eeiptiand bo prepared to lake part In
the election November ,?. .
There Is an added reason why all j
Democrat:; sliouhl veto. The Ucmo- i
? ' 1 \
c ratio eandjdrite for ;?pr? gross v/Hl have
opposition this year. The RepubliJ ]
/ can3 have put up a Columbia ntfgro. j
Of Courscf there is ,no "hope whatever j
of electing- him, but in the event of
the next congress being Republican '
wc have way of knowing what a
contest before that hotly might dcyclop.
De.niocr.hts should roll up such a
majority for If. P. tf"ulnicr that a
Republican congress would-find it ini- '
p c^-?
possible to upset the election. Go lo

Among tho 33 amendments to the t
N state constitution to be voted on at tho n

STATE FAIR. :)
Next week is state fair week, and
syerybody in L?exington county who
:an -spare the time; should go to Columbia
and take in the big annual exposition
of South Carolina's progress.
B*rom all accounts the fair this year
svill be noteworthy for the great showing
of agricultural advancement
which will b?- manlfeested in the exhibits
and nvnrv nnn Intprontorl hn
progress of the state should make an
effort tor get to the state fair.
There is also the social side of the
fair< which is certainly not to be forgotten.
Money may be a little tight,
but it has beep tighter. Life is not
inade up altogether qf dull times and
ere must not make it sor. "A little fun
now and thest is relished by the wisest
men." Folks must have- a little
fun as they go through life. It is certainly
a pleasure to meet'at the fair
