TRUTH TO TEIiD
The Griffin News and Sun: Why
must people go through life living
and telling a perpetual lie? Why not
the truth?
For instance:
If your neighbor is lazy, and his
wife earns the living, and his children
are hungry and half-clothed, why not
tell them so?
If you think public officials are inefficient,
and grafting, and misrepresenting
theiy constituents, why not tell
fhom ?r?
* ^
If Mrs. So and So ambles along the
streets exposing a yard or so of her
leg, why not stop her and tell her so?
If Miss Pertness has her face smeared
with powder, why wait for the
wind to blow ii off? Why not tell her
she is a freak?
If you have been making love to a
young stenographer, and your wife
suspects you, why lie about it? Why
not tell the truth?
If you want a friend to endorse
your note, ana you Know van nv.
er pay, why not tell him. so?
If Miss Dimple looks like a scarecrow
and you want to marry her money,
why tell her she is a sylph and an
angel, and all of that rot? What'S the
matter with the truth?
If you are selling a spavined horse
and yoil know it will fall to pieces before
the purchaser can lead it home,
why not tell him so?
If you owe the grocer and the editor
and you never expect to pay them,
why hot tell them so when you place
your next order?
If you drop a nickel in the 'collection
box, and you expect your generosity
to boost you into choice seat in
heaven, why hide your light under a
cloak of modesty? Why not get up
% and t$ll the congregation so?
What's the use of living or .telling
a lie, anyway?
Isn't the truth good enough?
Try it.

INCOME TAX RETURNS. ,
Columbia, Feb. 18.?Announcement
that there will be no general extension
of time for filing income tax returns
was made by the Bureau of
*
Internal Revenue today. Complete
returns, accompanied by at least one
tfourth
of the amount of tax due must
be in the hands of Collectors of Internal
Revenue on or before March
15th, 1920. Extensions will be granted
only in specific cases where urgeriv. j
need for additional time in preparing i
the return is shown. '
Last year, if for good and sufficient
reasons it was found impossible to
complete a return by March 15th.

corporations and individuals were
permitted to file on or before that da v.
a tentative return and were given an
extension of forty five days in which
to file a complete return. Conditions
which justified such extensions last
year do not exist this year.
Regulations governing the collection
of the income tax have been out
for almost a year and no substantial
changes have been made in them.
Forms are now in the hands of Collectors
of Internal Revenue for distribution
among taxpayers and there
is every- reason to assume that the
taxpayers have ample time in which
to prepare and file their returns by
March 15th.
INCOME TAX PAYMENTS
"Cash payments of income taxes
should not be sent by mail." says Collector
of Internal Revenue, D. C. Heyward.
"Cash sent by mail is always at the
owner's risk of loss: and if lost or
stolen, the sender may find himself
facing penalties for failure to pay his
tax on time.
"A taxpayer will find it more prac
tical to purchase a post office money
order, or draw a check for the amount
of the tax, payable to the Collector of
Internal Revenue, D. C: Heyward.
"The first payment, due on or before
March 15th, should be attached
securely to the completed return, ana
forwarded or delivered to my office at
The Palmetto National Bank Building,
Columbia, S. C. This first paym.ent
must cover either the entire tax shown
to be due, or at least one fourth of the
tax due.
."Early payments and early filing of
returns is urged, in order that an
overload on the final date, March
15th, may be avoided."
