DEMOCRATIC LEADBHSHEP IN
SENATE STELL UNDETERMINED
; - >
r*" ' .
"W&th the coming of Carter Glass
as Senator from Virginia at an early
date it was thought that the deadlock
in the Underwood-Hitchcock contest
ft>r Democratic leadership in the
Senate would be broken. It now app&ars,
however, that the vote of
Senator Glass will be offset by that
of Senator Johnson of South Dakota.
At the recent Democratic caucus
held for the purpose of choosing a
Senate leader, Senators Underwood
and Hitchcock each received 19 votes

complishing its purpose. Neither of
the two candidates voted at the caucus
and four Senators were absent
" and paired, thus accounting for 44
votes. Senator Johnson of South Dakota
was absent from the caucus J
and not paired, and Senator Hoke j
Smith, of Georgia, refrained from
voting, saying that he was so fond of
both candidates that he could not
bring himself to vote for either in
preference to the other. It is said
that Senator Glass will vote for Underwood
and that Senator Johnson
will favor Hitchcock, and it thus appears
that unless Senator Hoke Smith
decides to vote or some other Senator
changes his vote the deadlock may
continue indefinitely.
*X', "
Since Senator Hitchcock is now the
acting" leader, there is little in the situation
of a nature likely to worry
him. Special importance attaches to
the matter, however, because of the
fact that the personality of the Demfjocratic
leader is likely to have a
strong bearing upon the peace treaty
controversy. Senator Hitchcock seems
to have about exhausted his resources
as a. leader without securing ratification.
On the other hand there are
indications that with Senator Underwood
as Democratic leader, the atti_

Relief From Headache,
Chills, Etc*
Ringgold, Ga.? Mrs. Chas. Gaston,
of this place, writes: "I am s user
of Thedford's Black-Draught; in fact.
It was one of our family medicines.
Also in my mother's home, when I
was a child. "When any of us children
complained of headache, usually
~ T caused "by constipation, she gave us
a dose of Black-Draught, which wouM
.> rectify the trouble. Often in the
Spring, we would have malaria and
chills, or troubles of this kind, we
would take Black-Draught pretty regular
until the liver acted well, and
wo would soon be up and around
gain. We would not be without it,
for It certainly has saved us lots of
doctor hills. Just a dose of BlackDraught
wheh not so well saves a
lot of days in bed."
Thedford's Black-Draught has been
In use for many years in the treatment
of stomach, liver and bowel
troubles, and the popularity which it
now enjoys is proof of its merit
If your liver is not doing its duty,
. you will suffer from such disagreeable
symptoms as headache, biliousness,
constipation, indigestion, etc.,
and unless something is done, serious
trouble may result
Thedford's Black-Draught has been
found a valuable remedy for these
troubles. It is purely vegetable, and
acts in a prompt and natural way,

Mr. Kellog a few days ago and was
shown sixteen trees which were said
to have yielded in one year $1900.00

here from. Mass. in the year 1900. It
is amazing to see these trees today |
bending under their burden of fruit.
They do not cover more than a quarter

has done others can. do. It is worth
while for our people to investigate
this section of undeveloped Florida.
