WANTED TO MARRY
TWO AT SAME TIME
' Chicago.?Abu Nardin. may his
tribe increase, although it looks rather
\
doubtful at the present writing, tried
to get married today. He put on his
best fez and his reddest sash and arrived
at the marriage license window
- . .i
in the county building:, with tne omm
optimism, peculiar to swains who ar- j
rive at the marriage license window j
in the county building.
Abu's mastery of the language ne |
hadi"learned in the last five years was J
a bit vague. But this did not dete? j
Abu. For two years>Abu had been
courting, with a fine 11. partiality, a
buxom waitress in South Halsted
street named Bessie. And the time
had now come for marriage. j
For half an hour Abu fumbled with j
the blanks which are handed the optimists
on the public's side of the !
marriage license window. The clerk in j
charge, catching sight of him, asked
if nonld be of any assistance. Abu. i
with a merry laugh, answered that he !
could.
"I get married today," said Abu in j
his own dialectic way, "and I want two
blanks." ,
"Why two blanks?" inquired the
clerk.
"1 marry Emma and Bessie." said
Abu Nardin. "I have promised them
both."
M/uch argument followed. Abu.
growing more and more indignant,
demanded finally to know why a man j
couldn't marry when he wanted to, I
i
pointed out that Emma and Bessie
were in love with him and that he
would be doing either a violent injustice
to marry only the other.
After which argument. Abu left in
high dudgeon, his face set in grim
Itnes. It appeared from Abu's excited
remonstrances that he deemed the socalled
freedom of his new country a
snare and delusion, for in Stamboul,
where he had once been a citizen, he
could have married as many Emmas
and Bessies as he liked.

indignantly as he left.
There was considerable amusement
over the incident in the clerk's office
among the waiting couples?blushing,
