8 o'clock last Thursday morning:. The
fire is supposed to have had its origin
from the stove flue, and was far advanced
when discovered. Mr. Roberts,
who had been confined to his bed for
several weeks, was removed from the
building by one of the faithful negroes
present, and carried to a place of
safety. His condition was such, however,
that it is believed that the shock,
together with the realization that his
home, the place w^re he had resided
for all the years pa^. had been consumed,
hastened his death, which oc- j
curred a day later at the home of his!

introduced by Dr. D. E. Dreher of the
Lexington delegation amending" the j
law relating to the operation of the
i Austrian ballot law so that voters who
' are unable to read are at liberty to se- !
i lect a person of their own choice to j
scratch their tickets.
Dr. Dreher introduced the bill last
year and succeeded in having it passed
by the house, so that its passage j
by the senate at this session will with j
the governor's approval, put it in ef- I
feet at the next primary.

PUSHING CAMPAIGN FOR FUNDS.

has put speakers in the proI
gram of the anti-boll weevil campaign
! now being prosecuted in the infected
counties of the State by the Extension
Department of Clemson College, and
these speakers, stated the headquarters
of the eommisison here, have been
! receiving much attention for the people.

fund is being- solicited are explained
and the project for the erection of a
memorial building commemorative of
the participation of South Carolinians
in .the World War is expounded. The
Commission takes the position that
j the people will respond liberally,

when they understand what the solicitation

says that the campaign is "picking
up" in every part of the State.
County chairmen are manifesting
! much interest in the "drive" and it
seems assured that the movement will
