THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDACY.
There is much speculation and considerable
disappointment in Democratic
circles following the Jackson Das
dinner at Washington last night.
The New Yokk Times, one of th?
most powerful and unwaivering Administration
supporters in the country,
concludes a long editorial this
ftiorning regarding the Jackson din
^ ner as follows: "It Is open to tne question
whether the masses of the voters
Democratic or otherwise, will be deeply
stirred by any of the addresses deBvered
at the Jackson Day bansuet,'
This view will undoubtedly he shared
by many.
To begin with the President's lettei
> omitted the confidently-expetced anc
widely hoped-for statement that he
would not be a third-term candidate.
This ommission was particularly disappointing
to the many would-be candidates
for that exsilted office, as well
as their hordes of followers. Moreover,
to add to their discomfiture, in
suggesting a reference of the League
of-Nations question to the people at
the coming Presidential elections Mr.
Wilson has taken action which furnishes
the strongest possible basis on
which a third term might be sought
by him op on his behalf?that of vindication
of his actions in negotiating
the treaty the putting through the
League plan.
Democratic leaders, however, as well
as the *rank and file of the party, will
probably consent very reluctantly if
at all to any such plan, for they will
