Look at the label on ypur paper and see that your subscription is renewed before February 1. f ' , ; A STATE BUILDINGThe State newspaper does not be> Jieve it a- good plan for the State of , South Carolina to provide a suitable office building for the departments, basing its opposition mainly on the ground that it would * not prove an attractive investment. *We are not quite prepared to take this view, but even if it were true, the State of South Carolina would in no i sense be embarking in the business of j becoming a landlord, but only providing adequate quarters for necessary actitviies with some eye to the convenience of the State's citizens ] % who have busines with these departments. \ It is hardly to be doubted that strictly from an investment standpoint the State house and the, commodious grounds surrounding it could be sold and the officials quartered there housed at a rental below the interest on the sale, but would it really be; a , profit to the State or Columbia? The legislature can provide a build- j ing to house practically all the State's 'agents without increasing the taxes and it ought to do so. Looking back to New Year's 1919 it might be well to recall .With what exhiliration and buoyant ] hope the American people, fresh from , a victorious war, faced a pleasing t prospect of a return to normal conditions. Unfortunately the leven of unrest i and the greed of the profiteer have delayed and hampered the return to normal. For 1920 the only visible cloud on the bright sky is this same spirit, which -is yet abroad in the land. It is the biggest problem we have to face. Upon its solution will rest our national prosperity. There was never more work and fewer workers in the . United States than today and there was never more general prosperity or more opportunity for legitimate money-making by all classes of people. But we need to work, we need to forget war-time profits and war-time wages and come back to a live-and-let live basis. We need to submerge some ol^our natural human greed and be willing to see the other fellow have a chance. V ' 1 The new year will afford renewed opportunity for the practice of the old, homely virtues of industry, thrift, honesty and fair dealing. There was 1 never a time when this combination would not return handsome dividends'; but they should pay more handsomely than ever, now. For everybody in America, the prospect was never brighter.
