C., Nov 7.-Gaffney will formerly welcome the Upper Methodist Episcopal Conference to morrow morning at 10 o'clock, the first regular session of the confer ence following the Communion service which will'be held at 9:30. Sessions. will be held in the Buford Street Methodist Church. Addresses of welcome will be de livered by Major Henry C. Moore, on behalf of the city of Gaffney; the Rev. R. C. Gramberry, D. D., on behalf of the Baptist churches of the city and county; the Rev. W. A. Hafner, on be half of the Presbyterian churches of of the city and county, and Dr. Roy P P. Finney, on behalf of the Gaffney Methodists. Bishop Collins Denny, of Rich mond, who- will preside at the con ference, will make the response to those welcomes. The roll call and election of a secretary will then be tawen up, constituting the frrmal organiza tion of the session. The conference board of education will also hold a session at 10 o'clock tomorrow. Tonight the Historical Society heard the usual address by the Rev. .M .M. Between 250 and 300 are expected by the time for the opening session tomorrow. The conference will continue for a week, the reading of the appoint ments for the coming year being one of the most important features. Two local semi-weekly newspa pers, the Gaffney Ledger and the Cherokee Times, are issuing daily editions during the conference. More Than 200 Present Gaffney, Nov. 7.-The clerical and lay delegates arrived in Gaffney on all the trains yesterday until there were more than 200 present. It ap peared as of old before the division of the conference, seeing so many come to conference. Committees went to work immediately and have already got ten in some intensive work to be brought up as soon as the conference opens tomorrow morning. The Rev. M. M. Brabham delivered the address before the Historical Society tonight ot a crowded house on the -mbject, "The Hand of Providence ... ti.e Me thodist Movement." The speaker said he would not be original, ho would not speak against other faiths. He said the Methodist movement influenced the literature of England, also checked the influ. of Dr. W H. Beginning with the Holy Club at Oxford the Methodist move ment has gone on in making his tory setting forth doctrine and pol icy until it has been said to have exorted more and better influence on all phases of life and activity than any other movement of modern times ,declared Mr. Brabham. In a jocular way the speaker reefrred to the remark of a friend as to her church having been born 1,900 years ago on the banks of the Jordan. His response was that if Methodism had been born then and made the same progress as it has in 183 years the world would have been evan gelized long ago. The results of this movement, the speaker said, have been least in Methodists. The major results have been the in fluence on the other faiths and prac tice. Chicago, Nov. 7.-Violence in con nection with the election broke out here today when a Republican prerinct worker was fired on as he was leav ing his home. None of the shots took effect and the attackers escaped in a motor car. Bitterness has narked the campaign here.
