Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Rigby -returned home Monday from Herderson, N. C., where they went to attend the closing exercises of the school there, of which their daughter, Miss Aileen, is a teacher. The trip wis nade by auto. Mr. J. C. Johnson, who had hi Dodge car stolen about two ;weeks ago located it at St. Matthews last week and brought it home Saturday. Sheriff Hill of Calhoun county found it in North Carolina and brought the thief and- car back .to St. Matthews. Mr. J. G. Dinkins' Grand Master-at arms and C. H. Mathis District Deputy Grand Chancelor are in Spar tanburg - this week attending the Grand Lodge convention of the Knights of Pythies of this state. We are honored with two Grand Lodge officers from Manning. Rural Policemen Peavy, Kennedy and Hardy brought'in a complete cop per still Monday that they got near Paxville. The still was found in what is known us the old Indian camp. No one was at the still, but evidently they were fixing to '"make a run" as about 125 gallons of mash was found. Last Sunday morning about three o'clock, Henry Brewer of Manning, impersonated an officer at. Gable and held up a negro gambling game.'Rural. Policeman Kennedy. vas sent for and arrested Brewer. ie was charged with highway robbery and grand lar ceny. Or. Monday Magistrate Rid gill placed 'him under $500.00 bond. NOTES BY THE FARM DEMONSTRATION AGENT At a meeting of all the County Agents of the Pee Dee District at Florence May 17th, the following gen iral policy was decided upon to be fol owed as a plan of procedure and re ommendations against the weevil: 1. The judicious use of calcium ar senate in dust form by those farmers who are in position to do it in accor dance with the rules of the .Delta Laboratory at Tallulah, La. 6. While somewhat promising as a means of weevil control, the econo mical use of calcium arsenate has not been sufliciently demonstrated in farm practices for it to be generally recom mended for use by the average farm er. 6. Until the use of sweetened poi sons show in accurate tests a profit able increase in the yield of c'otton, wve can not generally recommend thenm. Howvever, since this is an in expensive miethodl and (does not en tail much outlay; it might bc more generally p)racticed by the average farmer than the more. expensive methods of applying poisons. 7. We condemn the use of aill traps and devices, so far offered for catching weevils, as being impractical, and further state that so far as the applying of liquidl poison, it has not prIoven successful. 8. We recommend that each county agent conduct several demonstrations with practical farmers in the different communities, usin gthe above methods to determine their relative value in weevil control; andl include the results obtained in his annual report on forms to be suppliedl by the Direct~or of Ex tension. In conclusion, it must be urged that for a farmer to expect results fro nmthe above outlined methods it will be absolutely necessary for him to rigidly conform to the recommoen dlations and unless this is (lone, it wouldl not be expected to get the best results by a partial application of these principles. Practically none of the farmers have enough po tatoes to make up car lot shipments, it is therefore Imperative that we ar range to ship co-operatively. It Is more than likely that one car wvill be shIpped Saturday, and prob ably another Tuesday.
