CYPRESS SASH DOORS BLINDS MOULDINGS AND MILLWORK GRAIN SMUT Clemson College, May 23.-There are more than 600 species of smuts now recorded. Over 200 of these occur in the United States, most of them on wid plants of little econo mic importance. Some, however, infest cultivated plants and are pests of the first importance, and among these are the various cereal smuts, say the plant disease inen of Clen son College, Corn is subject to two smuts, wheat to two (really three), oats to two, rye to one, barley to two, and sorghum to two (really three), J From the standpoint of Control these grain smuts may be divided into three classes. (1) those con trolled by surfade sterilization of the seed; (2) those controlilbia by a hot water treatment; and (3) those for which no satisfactory control method has yet been devised. Beolnging to the first class are both smuts of oats, covered smut or bunt of wheat, covered smut of bar ley, smut of rye, and kernel smut of sorghum. Seed of these crops should always be treated with for malydehyde before planting. They should also be grown in a rotation with .other crops. In the second class are. found the loose smuts of wheat and barley. Farmers are not advised to attempt to control these smuts by seed treat ment unless a central treating plant can be erected and the treatment made a community affair. A closer control of the water temperature is required than can usually be secured with the ordinary farm equipment. It has been noted at the Virginia Experiment Station, however, that some varieties of wheat are more re sistant to this deases than others, and the use of such varieties may be come eventually a practical control method. Among the uncontrollable smuts are those of corn and the head smut of sorghum. In the case of corn, at least, infection is from the soil and the air, and occurs at various stages of the growth of the crop. Control measures can be palli!ative only, and consist in destroying in, fected parts and in avoiding the use of containmated manure on the crop in question. From the time of weaning their pigs will be fed on some harden ing ration, such as corn and tankage, land will be compared with a check lot ~of pigs whose dlams were fed on hard ening feeds instead of peanuts dur ing their development andl gestation1 periods. When the pigs have beeni grown out and finished, sonme of each lot wvill be slaughtered to determine whether there is any difference in the carcasses; that is, if the peanut ra tion fed to the mothers has made it more dliflicult to put a hard flesh on the offspring with corn.
