He also remi d them that in a recent speech before the Sage Foundation' Cou el in the City of New York, Sec tary Hoover called for action, an said, "Health, Liv ing Cost and 6sperity Depend on ia Wise Scheme This associa n believes that the wheel plan of rganization as out lined 'by Mr. I. Parrott, Attorney for the Atlan Coast Line railroad, of Sumter, S. ., is a wise .scheme. The scheme is to organize the farmers withi a radius of ten miles in each dh'ee n by drawing a line twenty miles ong due north and south, thus m ing a wheel of this territory by vision lines like the spokes -of a icel, ten spokes make ten districts, ach district works under the d' ction of a captain, selected by t farmers of the dis trict. This associ ion begins the year's -work under o command of the following capt ins. District No 1-Paul McFaddin. District No. .-T. Heywood McFad din. District No 3-J. Scott Burgess. District N 4-Hugh McFaddin. District Ne 5-Leon B. McFaddin. District No 6--James H. Hodge. District Not 7-E. E. McElveen. District No, 8-J. M. Montgomery. District NoJ 9-J. E. Millsap. District No 10-L. DI Goodman. As an irc4tivc for competitive to-operation, Christal Store offered three prizes, as follows: to the -district making the best showing in exterminating the weevil this year, first prize, $150.00, second, $100 and third prize $50, the awards to be made by a plan to be agreed upon by the captains of the association and the plan to be publicly announced and to go into the record of the next meeting, which will be held at Gable, Sat urday, May 27th. Everybody in the bounds of this association, men, women and children, (within ten miles of Gable), are invited to attend and take part in this meeting, and are also urged to bring as large crowd as possible. All of the colored people are to be nw'"nbers of this association too, for if the white farmer is to get the benefit of any fight he makes. on the weevil, he will have to have the co-operation of his colored neighbor, just the same as of his white neighbor, therefore, bring all of your neigh bors and have them place their names on "The Roll of Honor" Christal Store offered a prize of $25 to the district showing the largest number above one hundred farmers enrolled for the fight. All of the far aci's in territory adjacent to this association are cordlially invited to meet with us at the next meeting, Saturday, May 27th. It is our hope that similar asociations will be organized this season at Summer ton, Sumter, Florence and Kings tree, and that the spokes of the wheels may extend out from these cities until they meet the spokes starting today in their direction from Gable. The farmers were pleased to have with them at the meeting, Mr. R., J. Alderman, the largest farmer in Clarendon county, who in a short but powerful address told them why he is not planting any cotton this year because, no profitr.ble practical plan of com bating the weevi lhas been devis ed. Mr. Watkins of the extension ser vice, Clemson College, addressed the meeting and gave the farm ers all of the information he could about the college's plan of com bating the weevil. He also gave the farmers a number of Farmers' bul letins No. 1262, and promised as many more as needed. Also all of the advice and assistance the college could render. Farmers' Bulletin 1262, page 10, says of the boll weevil. "An interesting habit of the boll weevil is to feign death-that is, to "play possum," or "sull," as it is popularly called. When disturbed, the insects usually contract their limbs and drop to the ground. Mr. Williams, demonstration agent for Sumter county, gave us the benefit of his experience and a promise of co-operation. Mr. L. I.
