TARIff PROPOSALS
Senator Jones Serves Notice That
There Will Be Votes on Every
Provision '
W~rashington, April 25.-Increased
duties on drugs, dyes, inks and
paints proposed in the administration
tariff bill came under fire today from
Senate Democrats in the second day
of general debate on the measure.
Reviewing the rates in the first
subject of the bill, Senator King,
Democrat, Utah, said the increases
proposed ranged from 150 to 600
per cent, presented statistics to
show that imports of the commod
ities unter discussion were negli
gible and charged that the result
of enactment of the proposed duties
would be to increase the "already
swollen fortunes of drug and
chemical manufacturers at the ex
pense of the American people."
Attacking what he characterized
as the dye monopoly, Senator King
declared that the propaganda which
he charged that it had circulated
was "false, deceitful and designed
io mislead the American people for
the purpose of having erected the
embargo which it succeeded in ob
taitning. In this connection he warn
ed corporations and business men
generally that unless they treated the
consuming public fairly the people
would "rise up in their wrath and pull
down the temple" of business.
Senator Jones, Democrat, New
Mexico, served notice on the Sen
ate that there would be votes on
each of the hundreds of rates in the
bill.
Senator Harrison, Democrat, Mis
*issippi, offered a resolution call
ing on the tariff commission for in
foriation as to the result of the
operation of the emergency tariff
bill. Ie asked for immediate con
sideration, but Senator Smoot ob
jected, saying it could be acted
upon tomorrow without displacing
the tariff bill.
"We were told," said Senator
IlIarrison, "that the emergency tar
iff was to be the panacea for all
agricultural ills. We knew that
was largely buncombe. The tariff
commission has gathered the facts

entitled to know what they are. The
facts will help in a wise consideration
of this hill.

THE ALCOLU MUSIC CLUB
The Alcolu Music Club met at the
home of Mrs. Brooks Harley Friday
afternoon, April 21st. There were
eight members present with our new
member Madeline Shipman and three
visitors.
We studied the history on the life
of one of our great musicians, Franz
Joseph Hayden, which we all found
very interesting. Our president then
asked each member to play her
favorite hymn. A duet was rendered
by Jennie Alderman and Mrs. Harley.
We decided to use our (Iues this month
