TO DTENI THE CAUSE Of WAVY ROAD SURFACE What causes a "tarred" road to de velop that peculiar scrubbing-board surface is a question that has been worrying the highway engineers quite as much us the long-suffering public. As often as not the symptoms appear in a macadam road that has been treated with asphalt. But the trouble is largely confined to roads built with tar or asphalt. Concrete and brick roads never develop such a surface, and ordinary dirt roads seldom do. 1 The Bureau of Public Roads of the United States Department of Agricul ture is building at the Arlington, Va., experimental farm an experimental roadway 15 feet wide in an attempt to discover the cause of the trouble. rhe road is laid out in the form of a circle with a 90-foot radius, and its circumference, 565 feet in length, is to be divided into sections, each of which will be surfaced with a different kind ,f asphalt or tarred surface. These prac tices, briefly stated, are selection, ginning in a clean gin, storing for two years or more and delinting. The important points to consider at picking time are selection and gin ning. If possible seed should be selected from a field containing no anthracnose and ginned on a gin which has not prefiously ginned in fected seed. On large plantations it would pay, both on this account and for the sake of being able to keep the cariety pure, to hape a small gin on which to gin the cotton seed for planting. Farmers who cultivate smaller areas might find it profitable to combine in suitable roups and purchase small gins for the same purposet If it is impossible to secure seed from-a field which is free from the disease, the next best thing is to plant seed selected from stalks grown in a field having only a light infec tion. The best plan is to go through a portion of the field and examine dvery boll. Every plant having as umany as one infected boll and every plant in contact with such an infected plant should be tagged. One group of pickers should pick the cotton from the tagged plants. The seed from this cotton should be fed or sold to the oil mills. Another force of pickers should then pick the re maining clean cotton into clean bags, and it should be ginned in a clean gi.n. At best some of the seed are apt to carry the spores on the outside, althout if carefully selected as des cribed above, there should be no seed infected on the inside. In order to destroy this outside infection it is wise to delint the seed with strong sulphuric acid. This will not only destroy anthraenose spores and the bacteria which cause angular leaf spot, hut will also make the seed drill better and come up better. The secret of success in anthrac nose control is clean seedl. Clean seed can he selected at picking time hut not~ later. First, sweep the house thoroughly and remove all refuse from previous storage advises Dr. C. A. Ludwig, associate plaht pathologist. Next apply the disinfectant solution. This is best made of one pint of commer cial (40 percent) formaldehyde in 30 gallons of water. Spray this over the interior of the house and over all crates that have been used before, until they are wet. Close the venti Intors, windows and doors. . In twenty-four hours repeat the entire operation. It will be an advantage to start the fires and bring the temperature up to 80 or 90 degrees if the weather is much cooler than that when the work is done. . The spraying is sometimes done with a solution made of one pound of copper sulphate in 25 gallons of water. This spray has the disadvan tage that it will kill only the spores that it actually hits, while the for maldehyde gas freed from the other solution will kill a good many spores that may have been missed in the spraying. However, where bluestone soaks into the wood and dries it will remain and be poisonous to spores afterward whenever it happens to be dampened a trifle. This solu tion, therefore might well be substi tuted for the formaldehyde in the second treatment. No spray containing lime is recom mended. Such sprays are sometimes used, but in time the lime will flake off the walls upon the potatoes and make a disagreeable mussy lot of them.
