hilEALTH OffIC[R HAYNE
IN MANNING MONDAY
Dr. J. A. Hayne, Public Ihealth Of
Icer and Secretary of the State Board
of Health, who was in Manning Mon
day in regaird to the Tonsil and Ade
noid Clinie to be held on July 26th,
27th and 28th, expressed himself as
please; with our town and its evi
dlences of progress.
Dr. Hayne has been head of the
South Carolina Department of Public
Health for ten years and in that time
this portion of the state's activities
has.-grown from insignificent propor
tions to a place where it ranks high
aniog the states in the work of pre
vention of disease and in the lowering
of the mortality rte. For one in
stante. in 1915 there were 9500 deaths
in the' State from typhoid; wh ile last
year there were only 2500, and it is
hoped to reduce this rate still further.
Good results have been obtained also
through the tuberculosis work. The
State Senatorium for Tuberculosis in
Columbia, put into operation uling
Dr. Havne's inciumbeney, is producing
splendid results.
)r. Hayne has had a varied exper
ience, litting him for his position. le
was, for several years, a general prac
titioner; spent three years as a sur
geon in the United States Army; was
for three years under General Gorgas
on the Isthmus of Panama during the

DEIGIONSTRATION
OF POVERFUL GUN
Washington, July 11.-A silent, re
voilless gun capable of shooting ia
gas bomb weighing 8,000 pounds 300
miles at a speed rate of from one to
live miles per second is inl process
of development by Miller Reese
Hlutchinson, fornier chief engineer for
Thomas A. Edison, and Hudson Max
im, the great inventor.
The demonstration of the gun in
New York last week was witnessed
by a number of people, including
Rear Admiral Samuel McGowan of
the navy, and William M. Williams
of Georgia and Alabama, until re
intly commissioner of internal revo
nie. Those gentlemen have returned
to Washington, and are exuberant
iver the succeps of the new instru
ment. of destruction.
The denionstration was made in an
Aie on the fifty-fifth floor of a
New York skyscraper. A steel bul
let, throe inches long and a half-inch
in diameter, was shot through a
three-quarter ine listeel plate at a
velocity of one mile per second. This
is greater speed than ever before
leveloped in projectiles of any kind.
The demonstration was soundless
Lxcept for the impact of the bullet
is it bored through the plate. The
sileneer is an entirely new principle,
11)(1 in 'no wise coniected vith the
>1(1 Maxim principle.
The ultimate application of the
un to the hurling of shells of great
'veight to great distances at remark
ible speed has been passed on by
le ballistic experts of the United
itates and England and pronounced
wacticable.
Until another war develops, the
iachine will be applied to steel con

struction work. In 4b New qrk
demonstration a threaded steel bolt
was driven through a three-inch steel
plate. The gun was held in iime
diate contact with the plate, and the
charge was measured so that the
bolt stopped in the plate. The threads
were left intact, and a nut was
screwed on. It is believed by the
inventors that the machine will here
after be used instead of the present
method of drilling steel.
The charge w.a 20 grains of ordi
nary smokeless powder.
The gun resembles nn air compres
sion drill. observers could easily
have thought that the force was
compressed air, the witnesses state
today. There was no recoil, no
smoke, practically no heat, only a
faint hissing11 sound of escaping gaas
after the <ischarge.
It is said that the operation of the
gun is as successful under water as
in the air.
