TEI S WOOD PULP INDUSTRY TO BE DEVELOPED Alaska is now manufacturing wood pulp. .Sampler of the first "run' from , a new mill near Juneau, in the Ton ge sNational Forest, have just been t remived by U. S. Forest Service of ftials, who state that this marks an (Vother milestone of progress in pulp f production for the newsprint indus- C llThe mill which produced this wood pulp is the first of its kind in the t Territory ,and is operated by hydro Oelectric, power. It has a capacity of 20 tons of pulp a (lay with power re sources available for increasing the otitput to 250 tons. While not equip ed at present to turn out paper, it the intention of the operating com any to enlarge the plant so as to make a finished product. The sample received is high-grade spruce pull), but ,hemlock will also be ground in quantity for newsprint purposes. .The Forest Service has tried for anany years to establish a pulp mill in Alaska, but the pioneering difficulties a .ending such an enterprise, coupled *- th the prevailing lowv prices for lp and paper, have prevented de elopment of the. industry. It was not until the summer of 1920 that the, first mill was built. The first run of Julp was made on January 24. "The Tongass National Forest of Maska," said Chief Forester W. B. Greeley, "contains 70 billion feet of timber,- sufficient to meet one-third of the pulp and paper requirements of the United States. There is also a tremendous amount of undeveloped water power, from which probably a qigarter million horsepower could be obtained. An area containing 2 bil lion of pulp-making timber will be placed on the market soon by the For est Service in response to inquiries from prospective paper manufactur 0 crio."
