CORBETI PLEADS S[LEDEfENSE' Orangeburg, Sept. 27.-The case against Carlos Corbett was resumed this morning and Mrs. Maggie Cor bett, wife of the defendant, took the stand first, followed 1ly the defend ant. The examination of Mrs. Corbet and Mr. Corbett was conducted by William C. Wolfe, one of the counsel for defense, while both these wit.. nesses were put to a severe cross-ex amination by T. M. Raysor and A. H. Moss, respectively, for the State. Mrs. Corbett testified, in substance, that on the night of the fatal shoot ing she retired early in. the night about 8:30 o'clock--and was suddenly awakened at about 11 o'clock by a fire which was burning in the road near the house. Mrs. Corbett stated she told her husband to go out and shoot oif his pistol, but that defendant did not do this on account of having to care for the fire, but that he did carry his pistol and three or four extra cartridges. While she was trying to put out the fire with the aid of her husband, de clared the witness, Bryan Salley Hugh Fanning, Julian Cooper, Jones Salley and Lewis Salley drove up in a car. Mrs. Corbett charges that the occu pants got out of the car and told Cor bett they were "going to give him h--," and used other curses. After one shot had been fired by the opposing party, she testified, her busband then opened fire. Mrs. Corbett further testified that she then returned to her house and that her husband, Carlos Corbett came in and dressed in a new suit, took a flashlight and went out and brought in a pistol, which, she testified, het husband gave her, stating that he had found same between the bodies of Hugh Fanming and Bryan Salley. She stated that Carlos then left to sur render, which he did. The testimony of Carlos Corbett was practically the same, claiming that when he was be ing pressed he shot in self-defense, after urging them not to come upon his premises. The defense at this stage rested its case, while the State presented . -eral witnesses for contradiction, among them being W. .1. Cormack of Coluni bia. With testimony closed the argu ments began this afternoon with T. M. Raysor speaking first for the State and Mendel L. Smith for the defense. The jury will leave early tomorrow to view the scene, after which the other arguments will be made.
