At this meeting of the corporators
several very important questions were
taken up for diicussion and tentative
ly decided. No definite decision has
yet been reached owing to the fact
that Orangeburg and Calhoun coun
ties are expected to elect corporators
to serve with those above named.
It is plannel to build the , steel
bridge across the Santee river and all
the -trestle work which may be nec
essary three feet above the highest
known water, and to huild a cause
way of earth through the 9,500) feet
of s;wa mp on the Clarendon side of
the river. It is estima'tedl that the
probable cost of the type of con
struction will be between $400,000 and
maks\ the capital stock ef the corpo
ration $500,000.
Many People Interested
The people everywvhere, both in the
adjoining counties and throughout the
State, are v'itally interestedl in this
project, there being at the .present
timie no liridge across the Santee river
throughout its enti-e conrse.
A very successful mass meeting was
recentl y held at Summerton to con
sidler the subject and a pproximately
$100,000 in stock was subscribed. It
is plannedl to have several similar
meetings in other interested towns. A
meeting has already been called for
in Orangeburg on Friday, 10, instant;
also a meetinog has been arrangedl to
be held in Manning on Friday, the
24lth, andl one in Sumter during the
first week in October.
A determined eflort will be made
to raise the rest of the stock neces
sary within the next sixty (lays. The
corporators are confident that, this
can he (lone without dlifliculty, there
being .'tuchi an interest in the matter
everywftere. Many public officials, in
cluding 'Governor Cooper, Senator
*Wideman, of Clarendon and the State
Highway Commission have evidenced
their interest in and app~'oval of the
proposed company. It is hoped that
it wIll be0 possile to commence 01p
erations on the building of the hridge
immediately after the meeting of the
LegIslature in January, at which time
- the charter for the company is ex
peCctedl to be grantedl.
