HUTING VILLA PROVES COSTLY
42,000 Men in Five . Years Lost By
General Carranza.
Mexico City, Aug. 3.-Forty-two
thousand men in five years was the
cost paid by President Carranza in
the campaign against Gen. Villa, Col.
Benjamin Rios, Villa's chief of staff,
told the correspondent of Excelsior
today.I
Col. Rios, who is here on a mission
for Gen. Villa, said Villa was con
stantly in touch with the Southern
rebels.

OFFICERS SEIZE STILLS
Williston, August, 2.-State Con
stable. W. F. Ussery, together with
other officers captured -two stills last
Friday on Edisto river, nine miles
from here, One was a sixty-gallon
capacity copper stil land the other was
of fifty gallons capacity, made of sheet
iron. These stills wore found, set up
and ready for qse. The officers se
creted themselves nearby and waited.
Soon Daniel Stroman, Thomas Stro
man, Elliot Jenkins and Ludy Gloss
ingale came up with a load of wood
and started their fires, it is said.
The men were placed under arrest
and the double aule team was seized
as well as the stills' and brought to
Williston. Large quantities of bur
and mash and about five bushels of
peaches was destroyed.
The prisoners wvere placed in the
Aiken jail.
