SEEDS ARE EXPENSIVE
80 BUY THE BEST
Every Farmer Should Control the One
Factor of Crop Production that is
Within His Power by 'Testing His
Seed--A Bulletin Tells How.
Red clover seed is selling at ap
proximately 50 cents a pound. At that
price a farmer ean not afford to sow
as clover seed anything that is not
clover seed. Half a dollir a pound for
weed seed, chatl', and dirt is too high
a price to pay for the privileeg of be
ing careless-particularly as seed
testing is comparatively an easy and
wholly an inexpensive operation.
'T'here is but one factor in crop pro
duction over which the farmer has
absolute control. Sunshine mwl mois
ture are matters that are wholly be
yond his power of intluence. Measur
ably, he can control culture, btt too
much rain or too long a dr ough t at a
critic.gl tilnw ma1:1y pliced even that be
yond his , wer. But. no matter what
happens. the farmer can be sure that
he is planting good seed -the kindl of
seed, that gives a fair chance,. will

Labeling of Seeds I'romised. e
The sale of seed;, in manely States, is a
regulated by law, the seller being re- o1
(ui ired to make certain statements as e
to quality, but the law is not appli- I
cable to seeds that go ihto interstate n
commerce. In order to 'et this dif- c,
ficulty so far as possible, the Secre- f
tary of Agriculture, in 1917, asked p
represen tatives of the seed trade to it
meet itt Wash.ington and secured the ih
counent of most of them t' a sugges
tion that seed men label all farm
seeds sold in lots of 10 pounds or
more, the label to show p'rcentage of
pure seed, percentagte of germinaLntio, Li
and date of germination test. In some ,
cases the agreement was not lived up
to, but the matter has again been
called to the attention of seed men
and many of them have again an
nounced that they will fully label all l
farm seed they sell.
Practically all large seedl houses el
now have facilities for testing the
quality of all lots of seeds that they
buy and sell. They have, therefore,
the information that the farmer needs
and he should insist on being given
this information when hie buys seeds.
Few farmers are willing to buy low
grade seeds, containing much chaff,
dirt, weed seeds, and dead seeds-if
they know how poor it is. The deal
er, however, almost invariably makes
his largest profit on the lowest grade
of seed le sells and is not alwaiys will
iig to put on a truthful label. The
farmer's protection lies in blying only
labeled Oe l,.

?ost general use and which it is es
ecially desirable to have tested are
he true clovers, such as red, alsike,
nd crimson; alfalfa; such grasses as
in; thy, orchard grass, fescue grass,
lue grass, broom grass, and the mil
'ts; cereals. rape, flan, vetch, and
.ar. Much of the seed of these crops
xccpt cereals and corn, is imported,
nd widely variable grades are on the
market. Just nv a great deal of
over see(d is being imported from
:aly, and specialists believe that
luch of it is poorly adapted to Ameri
in conditions. The prevalence of
)reign-grown seed in the market is
robably not generally recognized, but
is one of the important elements
making testing necessary.
