EARTHQUAKE IN MEXICO, CAUSES HEAY TOLL Center of Disturbance Believed to Have Been Near oVlcano of Ori zaba-IImpossiblo to Eeven Ap proximate Casualties. Panic Among Ignorant Classes. Mexico City, Jan. 4 (By the A'so elated Press.)--Scores of persons have been killed in a violent earthquake which occurred in many parts of Mexi eo last night. The center of the dis turbance is believed to have been near the volcano of Orizaba. Incomplete press reports indicate that the state of eVra Cruz suffered more than any other section, although seismic disturbances, were felt throughout the entire republic. Ad vices from Coroba say that 30 dead have already been accounted for in the village of San Juan Coscamatepec, where many houses were destroyed. There are unconfirmed reports of a similar catastrophe in the village of Huatuasco. At Jalapa, further north, 50 victims of the earthquake have been counted including numerous (lead. Lack of communication with the other smal ltowns and villages in the theater of the disturbance makes even approximate estimates of the casual ties impossible. The earthquake caused great alarm in the large cities. Marine distur bances have occurred off Vera Cruz city and there were some casualties, although the number is not known, with considerable destruction of pro perty. From San Juan Coscomatepec, it is reported that the shocks still con tinued Sunday. Information secured from the gov ernment observatory at Tacubaya show tha tthere were three distinct shocks, the strength of which decen tralized the instruments. The first shock, which occurred at 9.45 o'clock Saturday evening lasted five minutes. The 'second, at 10.25 was very brief but of terrific intensity and was ac :ompanied by terrifying subterranean noises. The third shock, at 11:01 :'clock was not discernible except by the seismographs. The panic in the capital among the igonrant classes was indescribable. Many of the people fled from their homes and flocked, to the churches. The Indians in the suburbs hurried to the shrine of the Virgin of Gauda lupe. From Toluca, Cuernavaca and Puebla comes similar voices of panic. Slight damage was done to the poorly :onstructed homes of the poor people. Panic reigned in various cities and villages in the state of Vera Cruz. where the people left their homes and spent the night in the streets. The damage in Mexico City was lim ted to cracks in the large buildings. There were no deaths and none of the inhabitants was injured. While the government observatory has not decided what caused the shock reports received from Cordoba, state :>f Vera Cruz, assert that they were lue to the volcano Orizaba although the mea& ,e dlispatches contain noth ing regardling a possible eruption or a volcanic (disturbance. The two volcanoes near Mexico City --Propocatepel and Ixtaccihuti have shown no signs of disturbance. The shocks were fet heavily among the towns along the ridge valley of Mexico, while the capital which is in the center of the valley, was not af fectedi severey.
