HOW ONE WOMAN SOLVED
THE CLOTHING PROBLEM
"I went shopping the other day, and
have been most downhearted ever
since. It costs a fortune to be well
:tressed these days. If we should buy
the winter clothes I thought our fam
ily needed when I started out to shop
we should have to give up our Christ
mas trip home, the books I wanted to
buy, and every pleasure we usually
plan on for the winter season." Mrs.
Jones was tragic in her manner as she
was telling her woes to her neighbor,
Mrs. Wallace.
"You are in the same stage I was in
two weeks ago," Airs. Wallace com
forted her. "I thought there was ab
solutely no hope, but I have recti.re:l.
The remedy was an overhauling trip
to the attic, and an evening's struggle
with figures. You do not realize how
many things you have stowed away
that are only half worn. The clothe
I found can be made over with the
use of a little iew material, and serve
Lhe purpose of some of the new gar
ments I had thought absolutely nec
essary. The trouble with you- and with
me is that until this big increase in
the cost of clothes came along we did
not take vh'y serious thought. of
them. We just took it for grante i
that we had to have one or two n'w
mresses a season, a new coat ever I
ether year, and a suit the other year,
with little thought. of the parts o'
Lhese garments not worn out. I foun.I
I had one garment that would repay
making over for myself and severa!
lhin gs that can he made over nicely
for the children.
"Then I sat me down with pencil.
ndl paper to mtake an inventory o!f
what we each had. My husband and Ir
1fter careful figuring decided on th
ipyiroximate stun that we could spend
mo clothes and I tried various schemes
V making that a monott cover the nec
essities.
"I am glad I went shopping as I
lid for in that way I learned approxi
mately how much I would have to pay
for the various garments to get good
material and good workmanship. A ftr
lee iding on the number of things 1
needed, putting in the rough estimate
of what it would cost to imake over the
elothes for the chiiren and get t in
my husband's estimate on his I have
finally managed it. Now I'm going to
take time to shop carefully and be
sat isfied with results. I shall take
aecount of what I buy, keeping cuirreet
records so that next year I can plai
with this year's budget in mino."
"I'll go tip to the attic this after
noon," MIrs..Jones decided. "'The high
cost of living is a hard. ha'"d te:'cher
but I guess I might as wI! ia rn the
lesson it is teaching moe."
