'T'here stood over behind the show case a pleasant smiling looking gentleman, on approaching him, he walk ed up with a broad smile and said, "Skinner, is my name just plain Skinner" well, we thought it best to get out o: there before Mr. "Skinner" got hold of us, but come to fin( out that that was only his name, and not his business. HI said, "His business was selling clothes," and that is wha he is doing. While Mr. Skinner is full of wit, he is on the job when it comes to dressing you up. Next on the right is the colored women's rest room This is something you will not find anywhere else in stor buildings. Now we are coming in to the Furniture Departmen and this is a big store itself. Mr. M. V. Islar is in charg of this department and is an experienced furniture mar Here you can find everything imaginable in furnishing home. Mr. Islar said, "This is the only store of this kind i1 the South that I know of and you can come pretty nea buying anything from a needle to an iron bridge" and be fore we got through this store, we realized that Mr. Islar' saying was true. In connection with the furniture department, is th Toy and Novelty department and one would think that Santa Claus has established his headquarters right her< in this store. You would think that the unsettled condition of thi Toy World, owing to the great war, would be a vexatiou problem, but we believe that this store has got a suppl3 that will take care of the demands in this whole country But last Friday a great many were taking advantage o the opportunity and bought their Toys for Christmas. Alright ladies, here is what you are looking for, Mis: Fannie Weaver's Ladies' Shop. Now when the good ladies and men too, walk in this department, they forget all o: their troubles, for here you will find something to look at. Not only Alderman's Store, but Manning and the sur rounding country, should be proud of this department, fog honestly, we do not believe its equal is in the South. Miss Weaver has spent a lot of planning and har< work in arranging this department as it now is. But wi take our hats off to Miss Weaver, for we don't believe an: more attractiveness could possibly be added to this de Ipartment to make it more convenient and beautifull: arranged than it is. M i SUMTAS. S.OC. fR Ha The Management. * Mr. Chas. Woods is manager of this great store and we feel that a more competent, adequate and suitable man could not have been found than Mr. Woods. Mr. Woods has ,a pleasant disposition in manner and . a business-like ability. He has without a doubt, a great responsibility on him, but nevertheless, it is one that he should be proud of, for any man should be proud of being its manager. Mr. Woods says that he feels like a great future is be- , fore them and a successful one at that. He said that they were in business to serve the peo ple and give them satisfaction, that he firmly believed that the merchants of Manning would prosper by this store coming here, for it would bring people here to buy their merchandise where otherwise, they would trade else where. Things that you heretofore had to get in large cities, can now be purchased at Alderman's 20 Stores in - One. Mr. D. W. Alderman, the senior member of this insti tution, is one of the best business men the South has ever produced. He is a self-made man; and while a young e man he had a rocky road to travel, but by constant per servance and hard work he soon began to see a new day dawning, and by looking far into the future he realized he would soon reach the goal in the business world. Every dollar he could get he put it in timber and lands, buying t lands in those days that most other people would not have. . Today they are worth fortunes. Mr. Alderman feels the same way about the mercantile business now as he did the lumber business forty years ago. When Mr. Alderman started in the mill business he was alone, with no one to give him advice or offer a helping hand, but today it is different, he has two sons, Messrs Robert and Paul, who are associated in this business. In fact, these two gentle men are in the lumber business also with their father. They are "chips off the old block," and no better busin-.ss men can be found anywhere. In conversation with the Messrs. Alderman they told us that they had been be seiged to open up this store in other towns, in fact towns m.any times the size of Manning, but they felt that they had made their money in Clarendon county, and if they could be of benefit to anybody it should be the people that had stood to them. And too, they see a great future for Manning an'd Clarendon, and if the people will stick to gether there will be no better place in the whole country than we have. The Messrs. Alderman feel proud of their magnificient store, and the people in general also are proud of this institution. It makes a new era in Mann Ing's business world, and from now on we expect to see Manning grow. .It is estimated that from five to eight thousand people came to the Alderman opening.
