WHAT THE DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE IS DOING
A Point of Vital Contact.
One of the points of vital contact
between the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture and the State ag
ricultural colleges and experiment
stations-the chief means, perhaps
by which experiment station work
extension work, and tie like arc
coordinated and kept fairly uniforn
throughout the -country-is the Asso
ciation of America Agricultural Col
leges and Experiment Stations, which
will hold its thirty-third annual con
vention in Chicago November 12 tc
14. At the same time a number oi
subsidiary and related organizationm
wit hold their annual meetings. Among
them are the Country Life Confer
ence, American Association of Far
mers' Institute Workers, the Confer
ence of Farm Management Demonstr
tors, and of the State leaders of coun
ty agents for the North and West
the Association for the Advancement
of Agricultural Teaching, the Society
for the Promotion of Agricultura
Science, the Society of Agronomy
and the Farm Management Associa.
tion.
Some of these organizations have
been fostered by the Department o1
Agriculture and the agricultural col
leges. Others are independent organ
izations with related interests. Ir
practically all of them, oflicials of the
Department of Agriculture are inter
ested. A :.umber of department met
will be in attendance, and, through th<
various meetings, will feel the wil
and the wishes of the people at the
same time that they pass their owr
thoughts along to workers in variou:
lines throughout the country.

Kerosene is employed in greatei
quantities, being used for starting

probably bring a reasonably good re

How Our Milk is Used.
Estimates made by the Unite
States Department of Agricultur
show how the 87,905,000,000 pound
of milk produced in the United State
annually are utilized. Forty-four an
one-half per cent is used as fres
milk for human food purposes, whil
36 per cent of the gross supply j
converted into butter, and 4.5 per cer
is made into cheese; another 4.5 pc

4 per cent is used in ice-cream makin

their irtdustry. The Bureau of Chel

of Agriculture, which enforces ti
this act, finds that a principal sour
of dlifficulty for numerous makers
soft dIrinks is their disregard of
opinion issued by the bureau seve:
years ag.o, that "such terms as a<

erages, either still or carbonate
which contain the fruit or- juices of t

be applied to products flavored oi
with essential oils or essences.
Labels which the bureau dleclares
be false have been resorted to
many soft drink manufacturers in
effort to explain the cloudy appeari

unlawful or inadvisable, soft-dri
manufacturers have resortedl to
tracts which are in the form of em

just as good as the alcoholic extrac

has led manufacturers to attempt
explanation b~y employing wordit

which specifically state or imply tl
the beverage contains fruit juice
fruit pulp, whereas their products
really flavored only with essent
