COPELA (Too Late for Last Week) a it: For the past six or eight weeks no e rain or rather comparatively little has n fallen in the vicinity of Summerton, is which has been of considerable aid to o the progressive farmers in this sec- c tion who have taken advantage of the s good weather and have gathered the a principal portion of the cotton crop. v There still remains a great deal to be s gathered but the good weather has u brought them safely across without li having an abundance of low grades r to -deal with this year. There will be i practically no low grade cotton on the, market here unless perchance we have an excessive rain or storm. For this we should be truly thankful. I The cotton buyers of Summertorn have every available space in town well filled with cotton now. The rail road company is powerless to move same and unless some plan is worked out in the near future we do not know to what extent same would he damag ed in case of a steady two or three (lays rain. We understand that the merchants and buyers on the local market have the promise of some cars in the near future which will greatly help the situation. It will take in the neighborhood of 25 large capacity cars to move the stock on the ground now in Summerton. Hon. Charlton DuRant of Manning made a very impressive talk in the Methodist Church on last Sunday in the absence of the pastor, Rev. Wig gins who in the meantime was attend ing Camp Meeting at Indian Fields, near St. George. Mrs. J. E. Tennant, Misses Frances Lofton and Mabel Davis spent the week-end with friends at -Ft. Motte. Mr. Tourie Briggs has returned from service overseas having recent ly received his discharge. Several cars of livestock have ar rived and been disposed of on the Summerton market wnich is one of the best in the state; taking into con sideration the territory to which the two Summerton live stock institutions cater. There are more horses and mules sold on the local market each year than in most towns of the same size with the same territory surround inr . The State of South Carolina and particular the county of Clarendon is lax in the support of education. With lavishness that mocks extravagence the neople spend money but very little of this cash good toward the cause of education. Other states and counties have out-stripped us in school facili ties because we do not seem to real ize the intrinsic value of a good edu cation. There vere present all of the Scouts there s in that section of Clarendon county xcept one. The efficient patrol Tender, Emory logers, is now in Virginia at the Washington and Lee University.
