C., WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1919. I SUPERVISOR KELLY MUST TAKE US FOR A TAX COLLECTOR Supervisor Kelly comes back at us again this week with another one of I his kicks. As he says, he will "hit back" for the purpose of getting better i roads. He is getting plenty of free advertising at our expense, and maybe j that is his idea of building roads, but it's a poor make out in the minds of the j traveling lublic. However, he says, that we can cater to the tax dodger slacker and grafters, and also confuse the minds of honest people. Now, we are not an officer of the law, therefore What have we to (o with people not i paying taxes? Supervisor Kelly must have us mixed up with the treasurer i *or sheriff. These officers take care of that part of the county government, i and perform their duty well. If the supervisor knows about these fax dod gers we refer him to the above officers, as that is none of our business, Ile - says, "this is the first year that it looked. possible for us to begin any per- . manent road improvement." It might look possible, but to the average citi men it looks very improbable. Ile has been in office now nearly three years, I and as lie stated in his political card when announcing himself that lie i "would make the bad roads good, and the good roads better," has failed to j materialize so far. Iowever, he has a little over one year to his credit, and j mhaybe he expects to "hit back" hard in that short time, and show the people howy hitting '"ack can build good roads. So we will wait patiently and see what is L. ming. Mr. Kelly's reference to the county printing is ridiculous. It matters not what he thinks we should charge for our work, I that is our business, and we propose attending to it without the dictation of E anyone. The county has always had the opportunity of paying for their [ printing at the rates made by the lawmakers of South Carolina. The officials that preceded Mr. Kelly must have thought as Mr. Kelly did, that the con- . tract plan was the cheapest therefore they contracted by the year and not by the piece. They have always got value received. They were satisfied, L and if the present supervisor is not; why, we are not surprised, neither do L we care. F'rom what we gather from his letter Clarendon county is made up of tax dodger slackers and grafters, with the exception of the Summerton dis trict, therefore he will give his attention to the Sumnierton road. We don't object to him naking this road good, it will be of benefit to a number of peo ple. At the same time the rest of the county deserves consideration. But .then they have stood it this long, and guess they can stick it out a while ;dunger. As for our motive being a selfish one, we do not know what it can be for we have never thought of such. Our only motive is to give to the peo plie service. That service covers Clarendon county and not one portion of it. 2 Mr. Kelly winds up his letter by saying "Let's quit this bickering 6 and go after the things that will benefit our county. I am ready, are you?" y We feel, and think our work will show that we have given good service to the people in our line--we do not build .roads, neither eo we collect taxes. If you have bills with your merchrant who has given you credit and an exten sion o ftime and accepted small payments, and take your cash to the city to spend with a stranger who has no interest in your town, nine -times out of i ten he will "do" you because he never expects to see you again. The home merchant will save you money with reliable goods, which he guarantees with his reputation.
