The proceedings of the convention to
thus far also appear to have dem- B

Attacks New Revolution ni
Zurich, June 13.-Speaking at the to
Majority Socialist convention at Wei- c
mar, Phillip Scheidemann, the German m
ministeripresident attacked the par
tisans of the "new revolution" whose
object was to substitute soviets for
the present government. lie declared
he would never make a compromise 2U
on a question like this, as it was a 3.
qustion of principal where all con- b
promisees were impossible. at
Her Scheidemann remarked that
while the political situation might be 11
clearly defined, the economic situa- ..
tion of the country was very obscure.
For Kaiser's Protection
Berlin, June 11-By the Associate
Berlin, June 13.-Letters exchanged
between offieials of the League for
Protection of William II, one of which
referrs to the remittance of 20,000
marks to Holland for the purposes
of "cultivating" the Dutch press as'
printed by the Socialist paper at Vor
waertr. The newspaper fears that.
the league must spend considerable
more than this on its propaganda "in
view of the determination of the en
tente to have the ex-emperor sur
renlered."
NO MORE CHEAP POTASH
Governmert Will Probably Put High
Protective Tariff on Potash
Washintgon, June 10.-Protection
of the potash industry in this country C
through establishment of a govern
ment controlled liensed system was
urged before the house ways and
means committee today by represen
tatives of the industry, the bureau of _
mines and the geological survey. They
declared that the fate of the industry
depended upon the action by congress
as it had not been developed uflicient
to meet successfully the foreign com
petition.
"There is $50,000,000 invested in
this industry," declared '. yron M.N
Parker, attorney for the United States
Potash Producers Association. "And
unless something is (lone immediately
the entire industry will be dissolved
and thousands of employees thrown
out of work. Furthermore, the coun
try will be dependent again upon for
eign countries for the material, as it _
was before the war."
Mr. Parker said arrangements were
made sometime ago for shipment of "
large quantities of potash from Ger
many in exchange for food, but that
the plan was abandoned after pro- I
ducers here had shown this would
ruin the industry, lie added that the I
situation once more was critical, asI
conrtracts had been made for import
ing 20,000 tons from Alsace (luring the
next three months.
,A. GI. WVhite, of the bureau of mines
told the committee one-half of theI
potaish needed by this country was*
produced here at a cost of about 25
per cent hiwher than the foreign pro
dueit. lie auded, however , thait within
five years poc ashi couldi be produced f
in the United States as cheaply as in f
a'ny other couiitry, because there aire
great deposits in the Western States. ft
