Chicago, Feb. 19.-A tentative ex port corporation, composed of meat packers, exclusive of the five large packing companies, was formed today by representatives of forty firms from all over the country. Twenty-five firms pledged $5,000 each, if needed, to start the corpora tion under the provisions of the Webb Pomerene law. Frederic S. Snyder, of Boston, chief of the meat division of the food ad ministration, called the meeting and explained that, as the meat division would soon cease to allot foreign or ders, the small packers might find it advisable to organize to retain some of the foreign trade which came to them through the exigencies of war 38 per cent of the pork product ship ped to Europe since the food admin istration began allotting orders came from the small packers, he said. lie said that for two years more at least the demand for meat would exceed the supply. Mr. Snyder's remark that the allo cation of orders probably would cease soon was reflected in the provisions pit on the Board of Trade, where hog products registered declines or fifteen to seventy-five cents. It had also a bearish effect on the sorn markets. Mr. Snyder asked the advice of the meeting as to whether the meat divi sion should continue during March to stabilize the price of hogs. The ex tension was unanimously approved af ter Mr. Snyder gave the opinion that if the $17.50 guarantee for hogs were withdrawn the prices would advance rather than recede. lie explained that the future course of the market de pended largely on such governmental action as might be taken in Europe with regard to stabilizing prices and regulating supplies. Mr. Snyder said the allotments to the small packers were equal to the combined allotments to Armour & Co. and Swift & Co. James Agar, a Chicago packer, said small packers would be in a bad way unless the allotments of the food ad ministration continue for at least an other month. - o NEXT STATE FAIR OCT. 27-31 Columbia, Feb. 19.-The South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Society, at a meeting held here to night, decided to hold the next an nual State Fair here from October 27 to October 31, inclusive, of this year. As April 12 will be the semi-cen tennial of the first meeting of the so ciety it was decided to have a lunch eon here on that date. The details were left to a committee composed of W. A. Clark, D. G. Ellison and A. B. Langley, all of Columbia. At a meeting tonight the officers were re-elected for the ensuing year: J. N. Kirven, of Darlington, presi dent; A. B. Langley, of Columbia, vice president; D. F. Efird, of Columbia, secretary; D). G. Ellison, of Columbia, treasurer. The executive committee is: J1. Swinton Whaley, of Charleston; H1. D).
