Letter to All Township Chairmen.
July 23rd, 1917.
Mr. J. L. Napier,
Jordan, S. C.
Dear Sir:
When Germany began preparation
for this great war she provided for
every contingency and for means by
which all of the resources of the Em
pire could be utilized to the fullest
against her foes. She had vast quan
ities of food stored, and means of
:lirecting and controlling the produc
bion, distribution and conservation of
the necessary food stuff.
It is to the credit of this Nation
that we are unprepared and that all
:f the industries of the Nation can
not be handled and autocratically con
trolled to the whims and ideal of one
muan, because such a condition, al
though necessary in war, is inconsist
ent with the liberty of which we boast
in time of peace.
To supply this lack and provide for
a mobilization of the industrial re
sources of the Nation there has been
formed a Voluntary Association of
patriots under the name of the Coun
il of Public Defense. The idea upon

I Graduate,
which it is founded is that the needs
f the government may be passed
sown the line from Washington to
the different states; from the States
to the Counties; from the Counties to
the Townships; and in the Townships
to the individuals, so that all pa
triotic citizens may know in just what
way they can best serve their coun
try during the emergency that is
iow confronting us.
You have been appointed Chairman
f this Council of Public Defense for
your Township. This is an acknowl
,dgement of, and an appeal to your
patriotism, and you have been ap
pointed because of the feeling that
you can be trusted to combine your
afforts with those of :others for the
:ommon good.
The first thing that we have been
requested to do is to urge planting
)f food stuffs. America is now the
;ranary of the world. If famine
;trikes and cripples any of our Allies
t means that more American blood
nust be shed.
Second: Our wasteful habits must
e changed. We must realize that it
s not fashionable to waste food, and
;hat a public service is rendered by
hose who save when they are rich
ough to waste. Those who conserve
losely every particle of food (because
food means more than money as sol
Hers cannot eat money) are serving
heir country.
Third: There are various other mat
ers in which the Council has helped
md will co-operate with the Govern=
rnent, such as the Liberty Loan, The
Red Cross, the urging of enlistment,
the detection of Slackers, the report
ing of spies. But the most pressing
matters at present are those relating
to food stuffs.
Will you not organize your Town
ship and endeavor publicly and pri
vately to cultivate a sentiment for
the production and conservation of
food stuffs, the need of which may be
hereafter communicated to us?
With regards, I am,
Very truly yours,
A. I. BARRON,
County Chairman National Council of
Public Defense.

Secretary.

RESOLUTIONS.
Summerton Lodge No. 105 A. F. M.
July 20th, 1917.
Whereas, it has pleased almighty
God to take from our midst our
brother, Thomas H. Harvin, and while
we of Summerton Lodge No. 105 A.
F. M. deeply deplore the loss to our
selves and his bereaved family, yet,
we bow to the will of our Heavenly
Father. Now be it resolved by Sum
merton Lodge No. 105,
That, in the death of Brother Har
vin the lodge has lOSL a most loyal
brother, and the community and state
a most worthy and valued citizen,
who dying in mature life leaves a
long record embracing the record of
a valient soldier defending his coun
try, a business career of rigid hon
esty, and active support of every
cause looking to the uplift of his
community.
That, the lodge extends to the be
reaved family its fullest sympathy,
and joins with them in sorrow for
the irreparable loss that has come to
them,
That a copy of these resolutions
be sent to the family of our de
ceased brother, and shat the same be
spread upon the minutes of our lodge
and a copy sent to our county paper.

Causes Death
Do you know why you have sick
headache, diabetes, neuralgia, rheu

It's becauso you are being poisoned
by products of your own body. Your'
organs of elimination are not work-'
ing properly. Waste material that
should be thrown out is being retained
to poison and intoxicate your system.
That could not happen if the bowels
were kept open with Granger Liver,
