WIANJNQ TREE HABITS VARY GREATL Winter Pruning Tends to Make Woc Growth-Summer Work May Tend to Produce Fruit Buds. In many cases extreme top prunir has a tendency to produce heavy woc growth to rejuvenate the trees. Heal pruning may develop strong growth i water sprouts. which indicates a lac of equilibrium or balance be tween ti roots and the top and often causes or part to live at the expense of anothe The habits of trees vary greatly; n< only in manner of growth from yout to old age, but there are many var; tions in shoot growths. Some have tendency to produce strong termini growth and when headed in form la erals. Summer pruning, if done at t3 proper time and moderately, may ten to produce fruit buds, while winte pruning tends to make wood growt] The relation of leaf and fruit bud shows considerable differentiation an every grower might pay more atte3 tion to the bearing buds of his tree; With apples and pears, for example some varieties will be annual bearer, while others will bear only once ever two or three years. Some produc fruit on the end of last year's terrins growth; others on axillary buds o last year's growth; some produce froz one-year-old spurs, while others wi not produce until the spurs are severs years of age. On trees in foliage one will genes ally find the new wood bearing leave singly while the old wood throws clu ters. The new growth generall arises from terminal or strong laters buds. The terminals may produc fruit, but this generally develops frox the laterals. CURRANTS IN APPLE.ORCHARI Fruit Always Brings Good Prices any Supply Never Meets Demand Some of Best Varieties. Currants are profitable and more planting should be done. They wil grow in almost any soil and bear well but they prefer a soil that is deer rich, well mellowed and well drained Currants do better when plante where there is plenty of shade. Fo this reason many people plant rows o Lee's Biaok Currants-Squares, On Inch. currants through their apple orchards This is an ideal plan. In the average orchard two row can be planted between each two rowl of apple trees. Keep the rows abou five feet apart and the plants, abou four feet apart in the rows, and keel the surface soil well cultivated, usini well rotted stable manure or other tel tilizer. Currants always bring good price on the markets and there are neve half enough to supply the demand People have overlooked plantini them. Here are the best varieties London Market and Red Cross for ret morts; Lee's Black is the best black while White Imperial is the best 0 all the white kinds. During this entire season black cum rants have been in strong demand 0] the big markets. They have brough much -higher prices than either tha red or white kinds. We urge the planting of more black currants; goot prices for them are sure. PROPER SOIL FOR CURRANTS Fruit NeeJs Rich Land and One Tha Ia Good Retainer of Mosture Keep Well Cultivated. *Currants require a rich soil and on' that is a good retainer of moisture The plants should be set three to fou feet apart in the row and rows frox frve to six feet. The patch should be well cultivate< snd hoed, all weeds being kept dow! as they are very injurious to currantl Keep well trimmed after they hay come into full bearing, as too much c the young and old wood will hinde the growth. It is not well to allow any of tb wood to get very old, as the fine! fruit is usually grown on the two an three year old growths. Keep Up Quality. In the up-to-date orchard where th story of success is told in plain figure on the cash book every precaution i o.'ed to prevent lowering the qualit of the fruit. SERIOUS DISEASE OF TREE Fire-Blight Has Been Termed "Gre Black Plague" of Fruit Industry It Can Be Prevented. (By 3. H. CARMODY, Kentucky Exm ment Station.) Fire-blight is undoubtedly the mc serious disease that confronts 1 fru~it grower today. San Jose scale no longer dangerous when treesa properly sprayed.
