Elephant Gave Sick Soldier a PIlL
In the Island of Ceylon. where there
are a great many elephants, there was
a young one which had been caught
and tamed when it was a little thing.
The doctors at a hospital used to take
it round the wards with them In the
morning, when It would see the sick
soldiers take their medicines and pills.
One morning a native soldier dropped
his pill on the floor. In an Instant the
elephant picked it up with its trunk,
popped the pill into the man's open
mouth, and, with a great puff, blew it
down. The eliphant in Its wild state
plucks tender leaves from the trees
with Its trunk; food growing about
the roots of trees it digs up with its
tusks. It takes up water with Its
trunk and pours it down Its throat
When the flies worry, it breaks off
the branch of a tree, and, making a
hand of Its trunk, uses the branch like
a fan.-Fromn "The Childs Book of

Two men were drinkring together
when the conversation turned on how
to eed and train canaries, which hap
pene to be their profession. They
were telling each other the merits of
their birds, which were to go in a
shcw, and both were sure of winning
the prize. At last one of them said,
in a'sorrowful tone: "Ah, Tom, if I
had only got the one I had last week I
should not have much trouble in win
ning, but I had taught him to sing,
'Home, Sweet Home,' so much to per
lection that the tears rolied down his
breast till be got exhausted, fell off
his perch and was drowned in his own
tears." "Oh," said Tom, "that's noth
ing. One night my bird was singing
'The Village Blacksmith' so true that
the sparks flew out of his eyes, set
fire to the cage, and before we had
time to. put the flames out the poor
little wretch got roasted to death."

.The Cossack
Tolstoy, who knew the Cossack, de
scribes him in his novel, "Thie Cos
sack," as follows: "He looks upon a
woman as the instrument of his well
being. As long as she Is unmarried
she Is allowed to make merry; but
once a wife she must put aside the
spleasures of youth and work even till
the end of her days to add to his com
fort. He Is thoroughly oriental in his
demand upon her obedience and toll.
As a result of this state of things, the
women, though to all appearances in
subjection, become powerfully devel
oped, both physically and morally, and,
as Is commonly the case In the East,
possess incomparably more Influence
and consequence In domestic affairs
than in the West. The Cossack, who
in the presence of strangers regards
It 1mbecoming to talk affectionately
or gossip with his wife, cannot help
feeling her superiority when he Is
left alone with her."
When Hot Weather Oppresses.
"Vben you feel oppressed, dull and

blame it all on the weather. Heat will
not affect you so much if tbe bowels
are regular. Foley Cathartic Tablets
