REPORT OF TH1E SECRETARY OF THE
BOAD OF TRADE.
t The Board of Trade was organized
1 July 30th. 190S, so has been in opera-,
a tion a little less than a year. it has en
n rolled membership ninety six.
e The following Is a brief statement of
a the organization for the 'year.
r The directors adopted a resolution
requesting the council to rescind a per
mit allowing the construction of a wood
stable on the street adjoining the
5 court house souare, and by direction of
e ?ne Board of ~drectors the president
F and secretary appeared before the coun
F cil for the purpose.
The cotton committee, after making
a a study of the situation here, has made
numerous recommendations as to the
D1 method of marketing cotton. These
M were approved by the :Directors, and
- steps were taken to carry them outbut
e it appear ing that it caused considerable
dissatisfaction, on the 26th -day of Au- I
gust., a general meeting was held at
whizh citizens and farmers were in
vited to be pre-sent and as a result of
their views, the action of the directors
was revoked.
e However the cotton committee in
s terested themselves in obtaining ad
ditional buvers and there is no doubt
that the ag'itation did our market good.
D The matter of a new street into the 1
property of Mr. J. M. Bradham. which
he proposed selling arA has since sold,
was taken up by directors and a com
mittee appointed to confer with council
e for the purpose of obtaining these
'Istreets.
In December a motion was carried
requiring the tobacco committee to
have printed a pamphlet on tobacco for
distribution in the county. 4
a A resolution was adopted by the di
rectors heartily approving the action of
the Board of Trade of Georgetown in
regard to the depot accomodatieas at
Lanes. We are glad to say that these
e accomodation have been improved
since the commercial bodies of the
towns nearby took up the matter.
The Board Trade offered prizes to
Sthe farmers bringing in the best ears of
corn and prizes also to the boys' club
rfor the best corn raised by them. The*
to take steps to bring alt the tobacco
e possible to Manning the next season,
-and they have been authorized to spend
the nece'r money to that end. The
pdetails of the plans they are to follow'
a have not been given out as yet by them
n The Officials of the Board oft Trade1
i early began work upon the matter of
a obtaining from the Department of Ag
riulture of the Federal Government
v an appropriation for farm demonstra
-tion work in Clarendon county This
s was acceptable and'when Mr. Williams
the superintendent for this State. came
- to Manning to establish the work he
o came to the secretary and a meeting
s of the Board of Directors was called.
1- The directors, at his request, suggested
Mr. C. A. McFaddin and he was ap
pointed. One of the directors went out
to Mr. Mr. McFaddmn's with Mr. Wil
liams and prevailed upon him to take
the positioni. As a result of the part
s the Board of Trade took in obtaining
the work for this county and the ap
lpointmient of Mr. McFaddin. Mr. Mc
e Faddin has conferred with the direc
v tors of the Beard of Trade and has at
i tended somne of their meetings.
:In December a farmers' meeting was
r planned to get tobacco experts here to
e address the farmers with a view of get
- ting more in the vicinity around Man
i, ning to plant tobacco. By direction ofI
a the directors the matter was taken up
a with Dr. Galloway at Washington.Prof.
, Harper at Clemson, Dr. Shamnwell of;
e she Department of Agriculture and va-,
t rious others. The meeting seemed cer
e tain several times, but in each instance
e we were disappointed, until recently
y we have positive assurance that we will
e have Prof. Harper. Prof. Barre and
it Mr. Mlatheson with us on July 14. In
taddition to this we have invited Mr.
n Williams of the Farm Demonstration,
e Work and Hon. E. J Watson. Commis
i sioner of Industries. Commerce and La
er bor for South Carolina and they will
> attend.
rIn addition to this the secretary has
d corresponded with Hon. E. J. Watson,
Mr. Harper and lion. Gee. S. Legare~
iwirth a view of obtaining a soil survey
.for Clarendoni county and the prospect1
n now seems bright that this will be done
e within the next twelve months. We
feel very much indebted to the good
t services of Hon. E. J Watson in this
e matter, as tie has seemed to give itI
-very cspecial attention.
e The secretary has had considerable
*e correspondence also in regard to the
*e tobacco experiment station for Claren
i- don county. Prof. Harper. in a conver
sation with the secretary, told him that
a there was no such station in South Car
f olina and that he was anxious that one
d should be established, and promised to
use his intiuen.::e t:ith the United States
s government to obtain the establhshment
t of suich an experiment station ini this
-Icounty -o be under his charge. He has
-endeavrored in this matter, also, to ob
etain the assistance of Mr. Watson and~
vof Mr. Legare, and has~ the assurance,
that they will aid us in obtaining this.
e IAll of t~his effort has been directed to
te one end-that of stimulating the growt~h
of tobacco around Manning, the idea
e being abat if we can interest the farm
gers about Manning in the growth of tc
e bacco by the talks of the experts and
tthen,. through the soil survey.
show that we have as good land for to
n bacco around Manning as there is in1
s the Pudding Swamp section of the
i county that many will plant and the to
r bacco~ experiment station being here
will stitaulate the grow:.h and desire;
s for accurate, scientific information in
regard to the growth of tobacco.
- Some effort has been made in regard
u to the Clinchfield .& Ohio railroad. but
d therejis nothing definite and it seerns
2- that there is nothing we can do at pres
t Bydirec:,ion of the Board of Direc
i tors' the secretary took up personally
with the Railroad Commissioners and
- also by correspondence the matter of
-the railroad company issuing bills of
e lading for cotton at the cotton ware
house. We have obtained a conces
-sion by which they agree if 20 bales or
te more are loaded for shipment to) ona
naddress to plc a car on the oil mill
r iing to be loaded by the warehouse
and sealed under its seal. This, for ob
vious reans. seems to tne manage
and the matter is still pending adjt
ment.
