SUMTER'S TRIUMPH.
The city of Sumter was in full
glory last week. It was cer
tainly a red letter week. The
Travellers Protective Associa
tion held its annual convention
there and it was entertained
most handsomely, and on last
Friday Hon. James Wilson Sec
retary of Agriculture, Dr. B. T.
Galloway, chief of the bureau of
plant industry; Congressman
Scott of Kansas, chairman of the
agricultural committee and Con
gressman Lever, were in atten
dance on the farmers convention.
These distinguished visitors
were also entertained by the
city. The chamber of commerce
had charge of all of the arrange
ments, and well did they handle
the great task. There was an
immense crowd, and all forms of
entertainment was provided,
horse racing, base ball, automo
bile riding, speeches and ban
quets. The details of this im
mense affair has been fully pub
lished in the daily newspapers.
It was a great day, and only
demonstrated what a pull to
gether-spirit can accomplish.
The visit of a Cabinet officer, and
members of Congress to a city
means a great deal. Congress
man Lever is a member of the
committee on agriculture, and
he is constantly seeking to se
cure aid from the government in
the interest of the farmer. It
was through his influence these
distinguished gentlemen attend
ed the farmers meeting, ,which
was the grandest ever held in
the State, and it is our opinion,
Congressman Lever will from
this occasion have a ready list
ener in Secretary Wilson, and
Chairman Scott, whenever he
wants an appropriation in the
interest of agriculture. The
large attendance at the farmers
meeting gave each of the many
speakers a most, attentive hear
ing, and when the visitors from
Washington came to the front a
regular old time southern ova
Stion was exteiided to each and
all of them, especially was this
noticable when that distinguish
ed Iowia, Secretary Wilson
was introduced, the audience
rose, cheered, waved handker
chiefs and hats for several min
utes, and the cordial demonstra
tion' was not lost upon the
speaker. He was visibly affect
ed by it.
The great audience also ten
dered Congressman Lever a
grand ovation. In him they
realize and appreciate that they
have a sincere representative,
and hard worker, a man who
~does not waste the people's
time in playing politics in Con
gress, but is always doing some
thing in the interests of his con
stituency, that they should show
their appreciation in the pres
ence of the gentlemen from
Washington was very proper.
Sumter is indeed fortunate in1
having a chamber of commerce
that is alive to the interests of
the city and county, and through
this organization much of Sum
ter's great progress can be at
tributed. The business men of
that city pull together and get
results.
IT IS ALRIGHT FOR THE OTHER FELLOW.
~It is reported that many of the prom
inent citizens of Danville, Virginma,
who recently helped to vote that city
"drv" are now -seized with cold
shivers" because the saloon-keepers
threaten to make public a list of those
persons who have been laying in liberal
supplies of booze la anticipation of the
inauguration of the "dry era." On this
list are said to be names of many of
those who voted for prohibition- But,
after all, why should these individuals
excite themselves? May not a man be
-conscientiously in favor of prohibition
for the other fellow?' Is not prohibition
legislation enacted in favor of the com
paratively few, who drink immoder
ately, by the comparatively many, who
do not? Is it not that we are our br-oth
er's keeper?-The State.
Ain't it the truth? Many who
urge prohibition, argue that pro
hibition -prevents the poor man
from enjoying a luxury he can
not afford, while they reserve to
themselves the privilege of
orderingwhiskey, drinking whis
key, and in many cases sell
whiskey on the sly to the poor
man they profess to save from
the luxury he cannot afford.
How many good men and women
are fooled by crafty hypocrites?
A man who urges prohibition
should by all means practice
what be preaches.
On the petition for a special
election in this county on the
liquor question. we are told
there are many names that were
put there by the party soliciting
the signatures. and not by the
party whose name appears on
the paper. In some of these
cases. beneath the name appears
the initial letter of the mian that
wrote the name, indicating he
was authorized to sign. It is our
opmnion everyone of those names
will have to be stricken oif.
There is only one legal way for
on part sign the name of
another, and that is by power of
attorney. or by cross mark wit- s
nessed. n
The writer has never seen v
these petitions, nor does he know '
when the matter will be taken d
up for investigation, but if the
county supervisor will permit
a suggestion, we would suggest
that whenever he gets ready to E
go over these petitions he will
invite to be present some man 0
who is for prohibition and one
who is against it. that both sides
will be enabled to see that the ti
law with regard to these peti- t
tiuois is faithfully carried out,
N
and we suggest further that the
county supervisor will comimuni
cate with the Attorney General i
asking his opinion as to signa
tures written by another person
than the name represented. Can b
William Jones write Thomas e
Smith's name to a petition of R
this character, and it be lawful. f
although William Jones says h
Thomas Smith authorized him a.
to write his name? It the Attor- 0
S
ney General decides such signa- 2
tures are illegal, the petition y
falls of its own weight, if our in- T
formation is correct. We are it
told that fully one-third of the s
names filed are not actually it
signed by the parties whose tf
names are represented, and also
there are many duplications. K

Workman Picnic.
Editor The Manning Times:
Several of our young folks at- f
tended a picnic at Mouzon's, near
Workman. Among those pres- o
ent was the writer. The dinner c
was served in the old fashioned
way. The ladies were untiring
in their kind and generous hos
pitality. While the party were
seated on the ground eating, a
kodak picture was taken, and
the most conspicuous in the
group are Mr. Archie Barron
and Dr. I. M. Woods, both in
candidate style pulling the meat
from chicken bones.
Messrs. Wilson McIntosh,
Epps and others were very nice
in their attentions to the guests. a
Old Pope Moore was among the e
dandiest of the sports flying c
around the young girls, trying o
to make them believe he is only
25 years old, and were it not for
the cravat he wears given to himi t
for a Christmas present by one r
of his great-grand children he
might palm himself off for a
oung buck, and then too it is'
reported he lost his teeth in the
war and is trying to apply for a
pension.
What ails the candidates. none
have so far appeared in your
paer? Can it be they are ex
peting to lay low and get on to
the job by surprising folksy It is
high time the people are to knowx
who they will have a chance to
vote for. It is reported there
will be several candidates for the
legislature, and it is to be hoped
our next set will not come from
the same community, as it is now
two of the three members live at
the same place, they should be
scattered. Why not get one
from the Fork this time, there
is good material there. The
Fork has at least one man in it,
if he was sent to the legislature
he would show the rest of the
State somethiag about legisla
tion. he can give us better roads,
imppve the schools and put in
improvements all round, and~
lower taxes at the same time. I
hope he will be a candidate_ so
we can have our representatives
from different parts of the coun
ty, and this is the sentiment at
this picnic. VSTR

CAN
THE ECLIPSE SHOES
be surpassed, when a man wants one
that lasts? Can the
SELBY SHOES
be surpassed when a Lady wants one
that lasts? YES:
When the trees grow upside down,
When the beggars wear a crown,
When ice forms on the sun.
When sparrows weigh a ton,
When gold dollars get too cheap,
When- women secrets keep,
When fish forgets to swim,
When Satan sings a hymn,
When girls go back on gum,
When the small boy hates a drum,
When no politician schemes,
When mince pies makes pleasant
dreams,
When it's fun to break a tooth,
When all lawyers tell the truth,
When the drummer has no brass
When these things come to pass;
Then only will the
ECLIPSE and SELBY
Shoes be outclassed.
