Gunpowder.
The explosive nature of gunpowder,
which is made of charcoal, sulphur and
saltpeter, is due to the fact that when
ired the charcoal and sulphur are
burned at the expense of the oxygen
in the saltpeter. much heat is devel
oped and large quantities of gas are
produced. This gas exerts great pres- i
sure on the sides of the gun; hence
its disruptive or propulsive effects.
When gunpowder is tired in a gun the
explosion is not instantaneous. The
expansive force of the gases produced
acts on the shot all the time it is mov
;ng along the barrel and gradually in
creases its velocity. If the explosion
were so sudden as-to-be practically in
bcantaneous the greater part of the
forces would be exerted mainly on the
bides of the chamber containing the
powder and not, as is actually the case.
on the shot.

The Oldest Prescription.
The oldest medical prescription in ex
istence bears date of 4000 t. C. It was
discovered in an Egyptian tomb, writ
ten on papyrus, and has been deci
phered by an English professor. It
bears evidence that it was intended for
some baldheaded Egyptian and reads
as follows:
Parts.
Dog's paw (calloused part).............
Dates ........................1
Donkey hoofs .................I
Boil the whole in oil and rub the
scalp actively with the mixture.
Egyptian history does not say wheth
er or not the patient regained his lost
hair.
Unnecessary Expense.
Acute attacks of colic and diarrhoea
come on without warning and prompt
relief must be obtained. There is no
necessity of incurring the expense of a
physician's service in such cases if
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Di

this remedy will relieve the patient be
fore a doctor could arrive. It has never
been known to fail, even in the most
severe and dangerous cases and no

The Lion-s Share.
It is really not the male lion, with
his terrific roar and formidable ap
pearance, that the explorer fears, but
his mate. The male lion is a good
looking poser, but when It comes to
business It is his wife who counts, a
a the African native. Game is pulled
down by the female lion, and then the
male beats her off until he has feasted
to repletion, when she may have what
is left; hence "the lion's share."

Burned at the Stake.
As late as the end of the eighteenth
,entury counterfeiters were publicly

March 18, 1789, Christianie Murphy

lerked'the stool from under the wretch
